Oracle Acquires BEA - More Software Consolidation is on the way

Hot on the heals of the SAP acquistion of Business Objects is the Oracle acquistion of BEA. This is of itself not a surprise, I had actually thought however that HP would possibly buy BEA at some stage.  I was actually going to write last week about an expected wave of SW consolidation. What I did not consider was that it was going to be the two biggest SW pureplays in SAP and Oracle doing the spending. I had actually expected to see more rapid activity from HP and perhaps IBM. It will happen but with different names.
For Oracle the move is positive, it broadens their enterprise reach, in AP it will help them in China which has been a BEA strongpoint, and it will put more pressure on SAP. It is clear that from an acquistion point of view, Oracle is leading and SAP is seemingly being forced to follow.
