1.  CommVault Signs a Collaborative Agreement with Sun Microsystems to Target the Enterprise Segment with Advanced Data Management Solutions
CommVault recently signed an agreement with Sun Microsystems to offer data management solutions. Using CommVault’s flagship data and information management software, Simpana 7.0, on Sun’s server and storage systems, the duo are targeting the enterprise computing environment in ANZ, and globally. This news comes in a month after CommVault announced a distributor agreement with Value Added Distributors Ltd. (VAD) to target the enterprises in the New Zealand marketplace.

As per the agreement, the companies will offer a combined solution via each other’s direct sales force and channel to help customers optimize their infrastructure for 64-bit applications based on Microsoft’s messaging and collaboration platforms such as Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007. Proclaiming the combined solution as “reliable, scalable and highly available,” the duo is offering to provide enterprise customers with a low TCO per mailbox and high-value footprint, and also cater to their critical data and storage management needs.

Springboard Research believes that this combined solution offers value for enterprises; however it is definitely not the “first in its category.” The partnership also hinges on Sun’s success in the region. As reported in our Sun article this month, Sun’s last quarter financial results for the region have been dismal , registering a trend contrary to that achieved by the competition. Hence, unless Sun’s performance in ANZ (and the region) shows significant improvements in the coming quarters, CommVault will fall short of reaping the desired benefits from this alliance.

Further, we reiterate our belief that it’s vital for CommVault to also cater to the sprawling SMB base in ANZ that is today faced with critical issues like increasing compliance costs, lack of IT budgets and expertise and is much in need of quick-to-deploy solutions. CommVault will need to assist its go-to-market strategy for the enterprise segment with a robust and dedicated sales and product strategy for the SMBs in ANZ (and the region) to drive its growth figures.

2.  EMC Posts Q4 FY07 Results Showing Strong Growth in Asia; Appoints its Second VMware Distributor in Australia and Launches Series of Products with Heavy Consumer and SMB Focus
EMC recently announced its fourth quarter results for the period ending December 31, 2007. The numbers showed that the company registered strong 19% YTY growth, posted net revenue of US$3.83 billion in Q4FY07 and observed a record full-year revenue of $13.23 billion in FY2007, up 19% YTY. Geographically, although Asia Pacific showed a healthy growth of 21% YTY in this quarter, overall the region grew even faster at 24% during FY2007. Latin America showed the most growth with 27% YTY in the quarter, while EMEA grew at 23% and North America registered a 16% growth. The fastest growing business segment for the company continued to be VMware, showing a phenomenal growth of 78% YTY to US$412 million, followed by RSA Information Security (30%), Content Management & Archiving (17%), and Information Storage (14%). The quarter also recorded acquisitions worth US$183 million, totalling US $692 million in the financial year of 2007.

Springboard Research believes that EMC’s continued double-digit growth over the past quarters can be attributed to the company’s recognition of emerging markets (and segments like SMB) as the key drivers of revenue growth. EMC’s five-year market growth strategy for Asia Pacific (with a special focus on ANZ) has bolstered the company’s local presence and we believe that its new information infrastructure products and solutions, along with key acquisitions and alliances with universities to promote its Academic Alliance Program (EAP), have added immense value to the firm’s marketability.

Future Outlook and Direction:
- Continued focus on the Asia Pacific region, with a definite and special focus on ANZ will drive double-digit growth.
- Consolidated EMC revenues are expected to grow 13% to US$15 billion in 2008. Within the consolidated revenues:
- EMC’s Information Infrastructure’s revenues are expected to grow 9% to US$13 billion in 2008.
- VMware’s revenues are expected to grow 50% in 2008.
- RSA Information Security’s revenues are expected to grow 16% in 2008.

In an Australia exclusive announcement, VMware has appointed itX as its second distributor in the country. This announcement is a part of the vendor’s expansion plans for Australia in 2008 and aims at increasing the channel coverage. This will give VMware an expanded reach for its products and services in the country and access to a new set of customers via the reseller. The announcement ends Ingram Micro’s 3 year-old exclusive distribution rights for VMware’s virtualization products in Australia. VMware already has existing relationship with itX who till date was restricted to selling only low-end desktop solutions for the vendor.

Further, Paul Harapin, MD of VMware ANZ has also noted itX’s existing relationships with Sun, HP software, BEA Systems and Wyse as the key factor behind their decision to appoint the reseller as its second official distributor in the country. The distributor,on its part expects the absence of a formal agreement between Sun and VMware to open up value-added opportunities for itself and its resellers and also plans to bundle VMware’s VDI product with Wyse thin client terminals.

Springboard Research believes that although this is a good business move by VMware, but it is slightly behind schedule. In our view, in the wake of the explosive growth in the ANZ market for virtualization products, EMC has responded rather late. EMC should have anticipated this market growth and ended Ingram Micro’s monopoly on sale of its products at the end of 2006 itself. Reiterating our belief, we see EMC as a late entrant to the storage virtualization market that is currently dominated by IBM. Hence, there’s a clear need for EMC to ramp up its efforts in ANZ and cater to the growing demand for virtualization products in the country.

Along with its announcement of a stellar last quarter financial performance , EMC also launched a series of products during the last month. With a heavy consumer and SMB focus, these products have been aptly aimed at the ANZ market that is currently experiencing rapid growth in the information storage segment.

On January 7, 2008, EMC launched LifeLine OEM Software, targeted at consumers and Small Office Home Office (SOHO) users. This software has been developed in-house by EMC for manufacturers of consumer-grade NAS (Network Attached Storage) , and aims to help users collate all their digital files in a centralized place and access them from any networked device. This software supports both Windows and Mac computers and has built-in data protection capabilities of RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disk) and Retrospect Backup software. The software is being touted as “a simple and easy-to-use system” that helps prevent data loss and manage data effectively. Information can be managed through most browsers and other gaming consoles like the Nintendo Wii, Sony PS3 and PSP. The system has also been enabled with various other features and supports multiple languages including three Asian languages. EMC’s OEM software is currently used by Intel Corporation for their entry-level storage system, SS4200-E, and is also being considered by another storage vendor, Iomega Corporation. Springboard Research believes that although this system has been aptly positioned in the region, it will need to support more Asian languages to cater to all the regional markets for optimum success.

Soon after its LifeLine launch, EMC introduced another NAS (network attached storage) system, the iSCSI CLARiiON AX4, specifically designed for SMBs and deployable with the VMWare Infrastructure. Available at a starting list price of $8,599 for at least 3TB of storage, the system can be configured with up to 60 SAS and SATA disk drives and is built on the same architecture used for the mid-range storage system, EMC CLARiiON CX3. The system is available from EMC’s partners and resellers and is also being offered by Dell and NEC under their own brand names. Springboard Research believes that this system offers good value for SMBs that typically have few or no IT support resources and that are increasingly faced with restrictive compliance requirements and the need to facilitate an increasingly mobile workforce.

Continuing its product announcement spree, EMC launched EMC Virtual Provisioning and new management capabilities for EMC Symmetrix DMX storage systems on January 14, 2008. On the same day, the company also introduced a line of solid-state drives using flash memory as an option to replace some disk drives in the company’s Symmetrix storage arrays. [Please refer to Other Top Stories for the full articles detailing these launches.]

Another major announcement by EMC was the launch of its SaaS offering, MozyEnterprise, the first offering from the company’s EMC Fortress strategy. This is a subscription-based online backup and recovery services for remote PCs and Windows Server environments. Defined as “a secure, multi-tenant, scalable SaaS delivery platform,” the service aims to provide customers with “centralized billing, management and metering” functionality. Primarily aimed at SMBs, the offering has been priced at $5.25 a month, along with 70 cents a month per gigabyte stored; while the server module is being offered at $9.25 a month and an additional $2.35 per gigabyte stored. EMC acquired this service from Berkeley Data Systems for US$76 million in September 2007.

Springboard Research believes this offering has very attractive/ comfortable price points and will be well received by most in ANZ and hence help EMC keep to its projected growth trajectory. However, we also believe that the company must exploit the capabilities of the SaaS model and continuously innovate and customise to the country/region or vertical specific needs.

3.  McAfee Augments Asia Pacific Focus: Launches New Partner Program to Target Mid-Market; Appoints Steve Redman of EMC as Regional President
Aiming to capitalize on the robust growth of security products in ANZ (and Asia Pacific), McAfee has launched a new partner program targeted at midmarket enterprises, which the company proclaims will help bolster its local presence. This “invite-only” initiative from the security company requires partners to meet eligibility criteria of having at least two fully trained sales staff, along with a technically certified worker. A part of the company’s professedly “aggressive” go-to-market strategy, the program has already enrolled about 40 resellers in Asia Pacific and intends to further focus on strengthening relationships with midmarket enterprises. Most of the resellers signed to the program are existing McAfee partners who already target the midmarket segment.

In a bid to supplement resellers’ efforts to further its presence in the segment, McAfee is touting increased coverage and support with its latest program. The company is now offering a rebate-based incentive program that will assure a 7% return on all deals once the reseller achieves base target transactions of $14,000 in the financial year. Other reseller incentives include direct contact with a channel account manager, 24-hour technical support, access to web portals and deal registration. According to Alan Bell, McAfee’s Marketing Director for APAC, the company’s “free online training and sales and technical certifications” are “practical resources” for its resellers; resources that he further claims are “portable” and not specific to any single reseller.

Citing lack of expertise as a reason for weak implementation of already existing strong security policies, Bell asserted that the company’s latest efforts “help resellers to help organizations.” The executive also noted that McAfee, which already has a dedicated midmarket staff, is now looking to launch more midmarket campaigns and other “midmarket-friendly” products in the near future. McAfee’s current range of products for the midmarket includes its Total Protection Software, which resellers can manage remotely and gateway appliances, like the Secure Internet Gateway (SIG) 3x00.

Springboard Research believes that McAfee’s go-to-market strategy to target Mid-market enterprises has been aptly designed for ANZ (and the region) and should do well (at least in theory) to churn higher revenue. However, we also believe that with most of the competition adopting a similar strategy with nearly the same offerings, McAfee will need to be aggressive in its offerings and offer a ‘better deal’ to the resellers who typically show little stickiness to any specific vendor.

In another significant development, McAfee appointed Steve Redman as President of its Asia Pacific region. With this appointment, the company aims to take its APAC business to the “next level” and use Redman’s “proven leadership skills” to drive business across all segments – employees, customers/partners and shareholders. Redman, who will be reporting to Michael DeCesaer, EVP, Sales Operations, begins in his new role immediately and is responsible for sales in North Asia, South East Asia, India, Australia and New Zealand.

Prior to his appointment at McAfee, Redman held the position of VP, Asia Pacific at EMC, and was responsible for the field operations of their software group across Asia Pacific and Japan. Redman was also the driving force behind the successful merger of the companies, Documentum and Legato, into the EMC Software Group. Redman comes with a vast range of experience and has had very successful stints at Rockwell Electronic Commerce, Lucent Technologies and Fuji Xerox. Redman holds a diploma in A/S engineering and a MBA from Macquarie University. He is also a member of the Nobel Laureates Advisory Board and is an associate lecturer in the MBA program at the University of Technology, Sydney.

4.  Sun Microsystems Posts Q2 FY08 Results Showing Asia Pacific Registering Least Growth with 2% YTY; Appoints ANZ Systems Product Manager
Sun announced its Q2 FY08 results for the period ending December 31, 2007, with Asia Pacific revenues up 2% YTY. The region continued to contribute 17% to the company’s total revenues in the quarter. Worldwide, Sun’s total revenues increased 1.3% YTY to US$3.62B, while among the geographies; Asia Pacific recorded the least revenue growth of 2% YTY, with highest revenue growth being observed by International Americas at 24% YTY, followed by EMEA at 7% YTY.. U.S. revenues were down by 8% YTY. Interestingly, products that account for the majority (62%) of Sun’s business witnessed a decrease in revenue by 0.5% YTY, while services that account for just 38% of Sun’s revenue observed a 5% YTY growth. Further, breaking down its services into Support Services, and Professional Services/Educational Services segments, Sun announced that the former’s contribution to total services revenue increased by 4% YTY, while the latter’s increased by 7% YTY.

Springboard Research believes that although Sun has been active in the region (with a high focus on ANZ) with significant new product introductions, like the Black box which was well received; its overall financial performance has remained well below expectations. The Asia Pacific region, that witnessed the highest growth for Sun in Q1 FY08, now shows the most sluggish growth at a mere 2% YTY in Q2 FY08. This growth pattern is contrary to that observed for other firms that have recently released their last quarter earnings, and so raises serious questions regarding Sun’s go-to-market strategy. While most companies are now looking at the Asia Pacific region (and ANZ) to drive double-digit growth, a similar occurrence remains largely questionable for Sun. We believe, that in the wake of a likely recession in the U.S., Sun has a very strong need to perform better in ANZ to keep to its envisioned corporate growth trajectory.

Further, although Sun has been signing ANZ-exclusive deals (deal with Acer to sell its storage and server products announced last month) ,most of its chosen partners have not been particularly robust in the ANZ marketplace. Springboard Research views ANZ as a unique market that requires a high degree of customization and localization. We believe Sun must associate with companies that currently enjoy a market leadership status in their respective local markets and are dedicated to their ANZ operations.

Future Outlook and Direction:
- In terms of geography, no clear growth patterns for Sun can be observed and so growth forecasts are unavailable.
- Despite the recent introduction of the Black Box, the likelihood of Sun resurfacing locally solely based on this product is yet again questionable.
- Reiterating our assessment on Sun Microsystems’ move to merge its Server and Storage product teams to form the Systems group: The proposal of a Sun exclusive data centre in ANZ, a marketplace that is already inundated with choice, seems a bit short- sighted.

In another significant development, Sun Microsystems appointed Sam Tan as its ANZ systems product manager. With this announcement, Sun is looking to grow its systems business in the region and use Tan to manage its systems portfolio including x86 AMD/Intel systems, blade servers, CoolThreads systems and Solaris OS. Tan, who will report to the ANZ Marketing Director, Paul O’Connor, comes with more than 15 years experience in the ICT industry of which 8 years have been with Sun. He will continue to support the company’s strategic relationships across ANZ and drive business at a time when Sun is proclaiming special focus on the region.

5.  Trend Micro Announces Free Services for Australian Resellers
Trend Micro has announced a complete waiver of fees on Worry-Free Remote Manager (WFRM), a hosted console that the company launched for its partner ecosystem in 2007. The system that was primarily developed for SMBs also caters to the needs of the partners offering managed services operations and allows them to centrally manage multiple customers from a single location. Proclaiming WFRM as “of critical strategic importance”, the company has also asserted that it will develop and innovate the platform on the basis of its continuous communication with its partners. Touting increased costs benefits and a potential rise in service profitability for its ANZ channel partners, the company is aiming to create the “ultimate loyalty system” with this move. Trend Micro claims that the system is unique in its “true understanding of the SMB reseller market space” and offers more than the ‘shopping voucher’ incentives and other promotional products offered by most competitors.

Springboard Research believes this move will be well received by most of Trend Micro’s resellers in ANZ and hence will stand the company in good stead in strengthening its local partner ecosystem. However, the move will fail to deliver the desired outcomes if the company does not follow it up with a sound product strategy targeted at the SMBs. We also believe that there is a clear opportunity for companies like Trend Micro since despite intense competition and a highly fragmented market, the demand for security services in ANZ is currently on an all-time high. Enterprises, irrespective of their size, are today faced with key challenges of regulatory compliance related issues, managing security complexity, lack of in-house IT expertise, high operational costs, and other corporate governance concerns. Lastly, we believe that the current market dynamics strongly indicate the need for vendors to offer ‘complete’ security solutions rather than functioning in their own niche.
