1.  McAfee Gains Momentum in ANZ: Riding High on Complete Solutions
As security concerns grips the minds of both, consumers and enterprises, the fight for market share and higher revenues has grown tremendously. New Zealand Herald reported that McAfee has declared a global increase its quarterly profit by 57 per cent on higher sales to the consumer segment. According to Springboard Research analysis, one of the reasons driving this growth is customers’ preference for buying a complete solution that handles multiple tasks rather than individual software that deal with only one particular security concern.

The firm has also reported increase in its corporate sales by 9 per cent. As per our analysis, the key reasons driving this is the same to those of individual consumers; companies prefer to partner with vendors that offer complete solutions. The growth is much visible with McAfee signing11 new contracts worth more than US$1 million.

Reseller (NZ) reports McAfee has launched ‘Intrushield 10 Gigabit Ethernet platform’ in New Zealand and is positioning it on the first mover advantages based on its ‘thought leadership’ in providing an intrusion prevention system (IPS) delivering performance of up to 10GB. Further, the firm is aiming to drive sales for this product from the high-end enterprises and is basing its decision on the rapid and continual increas in compliance and opportunities in international markets.

Reseller (NZ) also reported McAfee’s release of beta version of its next-generation Total Protection 2.0 consumer security software. The firm is now focusing on performance and achieving higher user friendliness.

2.  EMC Observes Strong Growth in Q2’07
EMC continues to deliver double-digit top-line growth for 16 consecutive quarters now. It has reported a 20 per cent increase in second quarter net income on a 21 per cent increase in revenue, driven in part by the success of its VMware subsidiary. Additionally, the revenue from EMC's RSA Information Security software line grew 21 per cent year-over-year. Also, the firm reported 1,500 newly acquired customer base in the second quarter of 2007out of the total 7,800 customers for RSA.

EMC’s VP Marketing, Jim Melvin has quoted the focus for the firm across all geographies and verticals. Further to this, RSA has signed fourteen new agreements (out of which six are with leading Japanese financial institutions) in the second quarter of 2007. One of such agreements is with The Southwest Multiple Listing Service & Tech Data Corporation which EMC claims as a strong partnership focused on IT reseller channel. Also, EMC announced expanded relationship with EarthLink which will further support Lockheed Martin on the Transportation Security Administration (TSA)'s Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) program.

Our analysis also brings out the key change EMC has undertaken to it’s the marketing strategy to adopt the green sentiments to increase sales targets. ZDNet Australia recently reported the release of a new version of EMC’s flagship product, Symmetrix, which makes a claim in improving energy efficiency. The source also commented that the firm is using the technological competency it acquired from RSA security to promote the product. Further, this new version of the product is expected to be available by August 2007 and additionally the firm plans to release thin provisioning capabilities to the platform in 2008.

EMC has also been active in document control and management services, particularly of unstructured data. As per Springboard Research analysis, EMC’s Documentum product has been received fairly well across ANZ and rest of the world and has been the cornerstone for the firm’s success in the region.

According to Springboard Research, another key area EMC is looking impact is improving enterprises’ business continuity capabilities by enabling long distance replication of data. ZDNet Australia also reported that EMC has announced an upgrade to its content-addressable storage (CAS) archiving platform, Centera Generation 4 LP along with the mid-range CLARiiON networked storage platforms. The source further noted that EMC is claiming a 67 percent reduction in energy consumption per terabyte. Reseller (NZ) also reported that EMC expects to boost business for the channel in New Zealand via the August release of its latest Celerra NS entry-level storage systems.

Lastly, our analysis clearly brings out the critical need for vendors to offer customized solutions to solve the client’s most complex and sensitive security challenges. This bespoke approach towards the market is a critical success factor to gain a stronger foothold in a highly connected marketplace.

3.  Sun Microsystems Revival From the Slump: Revised Go-to-Market Strategy
Sun Microsystems has earned much adulation from its stakeholder fraternity with the firm observing healthy profits in the last quarter this year. The scenario, however, was much the contrary in the fourth quarter of 2006 when the firm incurred a loss in its American markets on essentially flat revenues. Reseller News of New Zealand however reports that in the same quarter of 2006, other global markets for Sun had registered a two percent increase in the sales revenue for its servers.

According to Springboard Research, although these results are global, however, they have a critical impact in the ANZ region which happens to be a key market for the server firm.

Reseller News further stated that the company has accredited its’ cost-cutting measures for this boost in profits. Sun globally shelved AUS $583 million in expenses from its administrative, R&D;, procurement and other costs. The news source has also reported a comment from Sun’s CFO, Mike Lehman where he mentions lower component costs as a cost reducing factor.

Reseller News has also reported that Sun is experiencing strong sales of its SunFire T1000 and T2000 servers, Netra UltraSparc blade servers and the X4500 combination server and storage device. The news internet portal, www.stuff.co.nz of New Zealand reported that Sun has staged a recovery by overhauling its product line, offering servers powered by chips from Advanced Micro Devices Inc and Intel Corp, among other moves. Further, the portal reported a 5000 job cut by Sun last year to reduce costs.

This news for Sun comes in just a month later after the firm decided to do away with its old partner programme, iForce and unveiled its new three-level partner programme called Sun Partner Advantage (SPA) which it deployed from July 1.

Reseller News reported that the new programme is divided into four groups: systems, storage, software and services. The news source further stated that Sun in now focusing on the simplification of the global programme. Further, SPA’s main role is to allow partners focus on segments of the market, rather than the entire suite Sun offers.

According to Springboard, Sun has introduced this partner-centric model to boost its sales volumes after having been mashed up financially in its past five ‘bad’ quarters. Further to our analysis, this model will play a pivotal role for Sun because its go-to-market strategy is based on selling only via its partners and not directly to the enterprises. Lastly, having a ‘tiered’ system based on revenue targets will help Sun differentiate among its partners and offer more customized rewards.

4.  Trend Micro’s ‘Fresh & Focused’ Outlook: Channel Programme & SaaS
Reseller News last month reported Trend Micro’s new additional features to its channel programme to further support and attract new resellers and partners. The source also quoted Dave Patnaik, Trend Micro’s SME director for Australia and New Zealand’s comment on the new focus for the firm in reworking its channel programme and making it easier for partners to access. Further, Patnaik noted three priorities for Trend Micro: Making partners more profitable, help them further understand products and provide a portal for them where they can more easily monitor their customers.

The source further stated firm’s increasing importance on their ‘SME support portal’ which is an online resource providing their partners and customers easier access to technical expertise & information and provides users with the latest patches, builds and service packs. Patnaik further mentioned that the programme, which has been implemented in ANZ and throughout Asia, is of incredible value to the partners and says the firm has received a positive feedback from its partners. The firm also has launched its new remote manager in the programme, which they have dubbed ‘Worry Free’.

According to Springboard Research, Trend Micro’s new global customer management tool has been built to achieve the firms new focus areas and enable its partners to manage their diverse range of customers from a single, hosted remote console.

Another major development reported by Computer World of Australia was the firms’ plans to introduce a new security tool that identifies botnets and blocks attacks from zombie networks. Interestingly, the firm adopting a fresher outlook and has decided to use the software-as-a-service model for this launch.

The Botnet Identification Service, one of three hosted security applications part of Trend Micro's SecureCloud line, is targeted at ISPs and educational institutions. The service costs 9 cents per user for as many as 500,000 users. The firm has two other hosted security services: Interscan Hosted Messaging Security and Email Reputation Services and follows a go-to-market strategy of offering bundled services to the market.

5.  Sophos Responds to Market Demand for ‘Integration’
Sophos created much noise in the industry recently when they signed an agreement with GE to begin deployment of their software globally. As per Computerworld’s (Australia) news, Sophos will be deployed on up to 350,000 endpoints including laptops, desktops and servers covering every division of GE. According to Springboard Research, a global deal with a single vendor is highly indicative of the firm wanting an end-point integrated security service covering all aspects of security which very well translate into cost savings via better manageability for the firm.

In separate news, ComputerWorld reported Sophos announcement of a version upgrade of its endpoint antivirus software with new threat-protection and administration features. This release by the firm comes in at a time when the end-users are demanding integrated security products. The news source further reported that the product is targeted for enterprises with between 500 and 999 employees with a price of US$28.75 per user for one year.

2.  Crunch; Time for EMC Stock
Category: Financials
Storage: EMC

Since 2003, when EMC launched its transformation from a simple hardware storage vendor to a multifaceted information-infrastructure provider, it has racked up 15 straight quarters of double-digit revenue growth and strong profits. However, the company's stock price has been essentially flat over that period, an indication that for Wall Street at least, the jury is still out on whether EMC can deliver on its grand vision of information management.

Additionally, the revenue from EMC's RSA Information Security software line grew 21 per cent year-over-year. 10.  Sun; Microsystems Revival From the Slump: Revised Go-to-Market Strategy
Category: Financials, Mergers & Partnerships, Product, Sales & Channels, Strategy
Storage: Sun
Country: Australia, New Zealand

As per Computerworld’s (Australia) news, Sophos will be deployed on up to 350,000 endpoints including laptops, desktops and servers covering every division of GE. 1.  McAfee; Gains Momentum in ANZ: Riding High on Complete Solutions
Category: Financials, Mergers & Partnerships, Product, Sales & Channels
Security: McAfee
Country: Australia, New Zealand

Country: Australia, New Zealand

11.  EMC; Observes Strong Growth in Q2’07
Category: Financials, Marketing & Promotion, Mergers & Partnerships, Product, Sales & Channels, Strategy
Storage: EMC
Country: Australia, New Zealand

11.  Sun; Microsystems Revival From the Slump: Revised Go-to-Market Strategy
Category: Financials, Mergers & Partnerships, Product, Sales & Channels, Strategy
Storage: Sun
Country: Australia, New Zealand
