1.  McAfee Revamps Channel Program to Increase Sales: Focus on Resellers to Target SMB and Mid-Market
McAfee Australia has announced a new initiative for its existing Security Alliance channel program with a vision of equipping resellers with tools to suitably target Australia’s SMB and mid-market. This news comes just after Trend Micro announced its initiative in the SME space last month. In our view at Springboard Research, this move by McAfee is in part a response to Trend Micro’s August announcement and now McAfee is touting to adopt a more ‘segmented and specified approach’ to assist its resellers.

According to Springboard Research, this change of go-to-market strategy in ANZ to develop stronger ties with channel partners is a smart decision by the company which traditionally has focused on the end-users to drive sales. Further, as mentioned in August, the market for ‘complete’ security solutions is burgeoning and new avenues for vendors to up-sell to existing client bases are opening, particularly in the SMB and mid-market.

For resellers, McAfee is looking to portray a win-win solution by providing them a free access to SMB marketing campaigns including co-branded direct-mail campaigns and McAfee funded round-table discussions. Further, the company is pitching to develop value for the resellers by outlining the key benefits for them via online demonstrations about SMB family of products known as Total Protection.

In the SMB and Mid-Market segment, the company has launched the Secure Internet Gateway (SIG) 3000 appliance, an all-in-one security device that claims to protect against spam, viruses, spyware, and malicious Web sites. Further, to increase sales, the company has launched a handbook guide for its ‘VIP resellers’ that it claims will abridge information about the SMB and mid-sized market.

2.  Prolonged Corporate Restructuring at Sun: Partnerships, Product Introductions and Job Cuts
Accrediting cost-cutting measures for impressive earnings in the last quarter, Sun Microsystems has announced a further corporate restructuring as an element of its ongoing efforts to streamline processes. The company plans to make redundant an unspecified number of employees by mid-2008 and has estimated spend of approximately US$150 million on severance packages and other costs. This news follows from the reports last month when Sun announced an overhaul of its product line and unveiled its new three-level partner programme called Sun Partner Advantage (SPA).

According to Springboard Research, given Sun’s recent string of changes, the lay off is most likely to focus around its technical operations. In our view, Sun is now keenly looking at the global delivery model and hence planning to use centres across the globe that offer equivalent or better technical capabilities at a competitive cost structure. However, a department that is unlikely to see much lay off will be sales that the company is using to drive its new programs in the region.

Further, the company is anticipating this corporate restructuring to improve its revenue growth in the region of low to mid single-digits on a YOY basis for fiscal 2008 and the gross margins in the range of 43 percent to 46 percent.
Other than cost cutting measures, Springboard Research expects that if Sun is to realise strong growth figures, it will be based upon the company’s scheduled product introductions and its aggressive partnerships with firms like EDS, Google, IBM [read more in Other Top Stories] amongst others to fight stiff competition from Microsoft and other competitors. Sun’s recent most partnership with Google now offers Sun’s office suite, ‘StarOffice 8’ free through ‘Google Pack’, which otherwise Sun normally sells for US$70. In our view, by establishing an innovative partnership model with Google, Sun is trying to level off with its rival Microsoft and is attempting to lure away Microsoft Office users by offering additional services of an integrated Google Search toolbar in all of the StarOffice applications.

With an intention of expand beyond the sever market, the company is expected to launch UltraSparc T2, an eight-core, 64-thread microprocessor, into servers in the second half of the year. Further, the company also plans to sell the chip to third-party manufacturers of storage equipment, networking devices, set-top boxes and other computers. Other recent product introductions include a new virtual tape library using StorageTek software and Thumper, aka X4500, hybrid server hardware with a total capacity of 24 TB.

3.  EMC Offloads 10% VMware Shares, Raises US$ 957 Million and Undertakes Key Acquisitions
The largest vendor of virtualization software to Intel and AMD, VMware, announced an IPO to offload 10 per cent or 33 million shares. The stock for this highly anticipated IPO peaked at US $55.50 and closed at US $51, up 76 per cent from the opening price raising a total of US$957 million for EMC. The company is looking to invest these proceedings towards employees’ stock options, retire debt and R&D.;
Although the company has been attaining a sustained double-digit top-line growth for 16 consecutive quarters, aggressive competition from other low cost alternatives (XenSource and Virtual Iron Software) has the potential to dampen this historically strong growth in the near future. In the view of Springboard Research, Windows Server 2008 (with Viridian Hypervisor) will pose the strongest competition to EMC and force it to adapt its business model to sustain in the marketplace.

This IPO could change the dynamics in markets like ANZ that are showing strong signs of virtualization adoption and compel the leading large OEMs like HP and IBM to further invest in their own local capacities or in other companies that are leading the Virtualization forefront in the region and globally.

In the view of Springboard Research, this IPO is a significant milestone for EMC and it may use these funds to further refine its virtualization technology, create an enhanced consulting force and make key acquisitions to bolster its business.

With freshly infused capital from the IPO, the company has acquired BusinessEdge Solutions based in East Brunswick, N.J. to further develop its expertise in the services domain. Although a backlash from this acquisition is likely to be felt by EMC in its US channel network, however, the company wants to prepare in advance for a similar reaction from its channel partners in ANZ where it might acquire similar companies. Further, to shield itself from any likely losses the company has reassured its channel partner community in its key markets of not harming their vested interests and touting this acquisition as a corridor of expanding the scope of their information management services expertise.

According to Springboard Research, EMC’s expansion into the services space shall act as a ‘potential conflict zone’ for the vested interests of its channel partners. With company’s direct sales efforts to enterprises and early adoption of Virtualization in markets like ANZ, revenues of local partners might be affected and hence force a change through the network dynamics. However, we expect this change only for their US$1.73 billion worth services area that is split amongst the company’s four broad product areas of Information storage, Content management, RSA Information security and VMware.

The security arm of EMC, RSA, has acquired Tablus, a privately held developer of data loss prevention platform. This acquisition helps the company to add data discovery, monitoring and classification and data loss prevention solutions to its current data security offerings. The company is expected to close the transaction in the fourth quarter.
EMC is searching for new partners whom the company describes can take advantage of its combined storage and security technology. The company has sized the opportunity for this combined technology at US $60 billion. With the market trend expected in favour of the combined storage and security technology, the company’s channel partners in ANZ have new lucrative opportunities to up-sell to clients and offer higher value via these end-to-end solutions.

We at Springboard Research believe that EMC’s sustained growth in the recent past along with its key acquisitions has been critical in suitably catering to the burgeoning clients’ demand of compliance and providing them data management services that are both timely and secure.

Sun Microsystems will change its stock ticker from SUNW to JAVA in an effort to capitalise on the Java brand. Sun is making the shift because Java has far greater brand awareness than the company's name, said CEO Jonathan Schwartz in his blog. The current symbol, which stands for Stanford University Network Workstation, reflects the company's origins but not its present, he said. "The number of people who know Java swamps the number of people who know Sun," Schwartz wrote. "JAVA is a technology whose value is near infinite to the Internet, and a brand that's inseparably a part of Sun (and our profitability)."

Sun Microsystems has ambitious plans for the commercial and open-source versions of its Solaris operating system, hoping to achieve for Solaris the kind of ubiquity already enjoyed by Java. To come close to reaching that goal, Sun needs to reach out more to developers and endeavor to overcome some long-held prejudices against the OS. Sun's Java programming language, which debuted in 1995, is present in most of today's PCs, mobile devices and embedded systems. The vendor is now seeking that same kind of omnipresence for Solaris, its flavor of Unix. Sun intends to take the operating system into markets where it hasn't traditionally been a force, such as desktop and embedded systems, according to Marc Hamilton, vice president of Solaris marketing at Sun. The vendor is also keen to position OpenSolaris as a real alternative to Linux.

Storage: Sun
Country: Australia, New Zealand
Company Size: Enterprise, Mid-market, SMB
