1. CommVault Publishes Q3 2008 Financial Results; Targets SMBs in ANZ with its Last Month’s SaaS Launch In its latest financial announcement for Q308, CommVault reported record revenues of $50.3 million, representing robust growth of 31% over Q307 and 6% over Q208. The data management firm’s revenue growth was driven by a healthy 28% YTY increase in its software revenue, which reached $27 million, and an impressive 36% YTY and 12% sequential increase in its services revenue, which measured $23.3 million. In addition, the company reported a 34.8% YTY increase in its sales and marketing expenses that totalled $23.4 million for Q308.
Springboard Research reiterates its belief that most of CommVault’s growth is driven by its latest product, Simpana 7.0, the data management suite that takes a singular approach to data protection, replication and archiving. Furthermore, we believe the company is successfully forming meaningful alliances and partnerships in ANZ that are helping it move up the value stream and accrue more revenue from its services offerings designed mainly around Simpana 7.0.
We also believe that with record growth in the past quarter and its revised go-to-market strategy focusing on emerging products (like ROMS) targeted at the high-potential SMB segment, CommVault should be seen as a key player in ANZ’s data management marketplace. The SaaS package, ROMS that was launched last month, is being sold via channel partners in ANZ and licensed on a per CommCell (media server) basis to be billed to the customer on a monthly basis. Further, ROMS has been targeted at SMBs in ANZ with 50 or less servers that are currently using the company’s Simpana software suite. To ensure channel partner interest in ROMS, CommVault continues to offer product support through its centralised support team, thereby releasing the reseller from the responsibility of setting up dedicated infrastructure for the same.
Lastly, we also assert that the company will need to ramp up its R&D; activities and better differentiate itself from the competition. In our view, CommVault must ensure that they are leading, rather than following the market, and not producing only “me too” products.
Revenue Outlook:
- Consolidated CommVault revenues for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2008 are expected to be in the range of $195 million to $196 million.
- Continued focus on the Asia Pacific region to drive double-digit growth, especially from China.

2. Trend Micro Publishes its Q4 FY07 Results Showing Healthy Growth in Asia-Pacific; Also Acquires a UK-based Internet Content Security Firm Trend Micro recently announced its fourth quarter results for the period ending December 31, 2007. The numbers showed that the company registered strong growth of 13% YTY, and 4% sequential growth (in Yen), posted net sales of US$231 million (26,213 million Yen) in Q4 FY07 and observed steady full-year net sales worth US$848 million (99,805 million Yen) in FY2007, up 17% YTY. Geographically, Asia Pacific showed healthy growth of 12% YTY in this quarter, while North America showed the most growth with 21% YTY in the quarter, closely followed by Europe at 14%. Japan came in last with 8% . Operating income for Q4 FY07 was pegged at US$73 million (8,300 million Yen) and net income at US$46 million (5,227 million Yen). In FY07, products and services sold to enterprises, mid-market and small business customers, contributed 74% of the consolidated revenue, while the remaining 26% was contributed by consumer product sales.
Springboard Research believes that although the company is doing reasonably well in the region, in the wake of a slowdown in the U.S. economy, it will need to work hard to drive higher growth rates.. Trend Micro’s latest product introduction, LeakProof 3.0, aimed at the data-leak prevention (DLP) market, is a robust product and addresses the growing demand in the local marketplace. In our view, Trend Micro must focus on similar areas and continue to launch innovative products for a more vigorous thrust in the region, which can help drive higher growth rates.
In a separate development, Trend Micro announced its decision to acquire Identum, a U.K.-based company specializing in the development of identity-based email encryption technology. The acquired company will be christened Trend Micro (Bristol) Ltd. and use its cryptography expertise to add value to the parent company’s existing encryption technology.
Revenue Outlook:
- Consolidated net sales for the first quarter ending March 31, 2008 is expected to be US$239 million (25,100 million yen)
- Operating income and net income are expected to be US$62 million (6,600 million yen) and US$39 million (4,100 million yen), respectively.

3. NetApp Publishes Q3 FY07 Financial Results; Expands Channel Program; Undertakes Key Internal Promotions; Introduces New Products to Cater to Enterprises NetApp announced its Q3 FY08 results for the period ending December 31, 2007, showing net revenue up to US$884 million, a 21% YTY from 2007, and 12% sequential increase, from Q2 FY08. The company also reported a healthy 18% YTD increase for the first nine months of the current 2008 fiscal year, with net revenue totalling US$2.4 billion as compared to US$2 billion for the same period of the previous fiscal year.
In a move to strengthen its partner ecosystem and expand market share, the company has launched a new partner program dubbed the Authorized Professional Service Partner Program. By aggressively promoting its storage devices and software, the company is hoping to bring almost a quarter of its channel partners into its Authorized Professional Service network in the first year and approximately half over the coming years. The company is also looking to rope in system integrators by touting a successful channel program whereby indirect sales from its current worldwide network of 1,000 channel partners account for almost 70% of total revenues.
Furthermore, Rick DeTurck, Senior Director of Services Marketing, has stated a preference for Microsoft applications. These according to him, “really do well” on NetApp’s storage devices. He has also asserted that since almost half of their existing partners are certified Microsoft partners, NetApp has customized its software to take advantage of Microsoft’s OS and applications.
The company rolled the partner program out in two phases, each with its own distinct speciality solution area for partners. The company is initially focusing on the below:
- Storage system design and implementation - Network storage for virtualized infrastructure - Virtual tape library design and implementation - Microsoft applications
Other speciality areas for the channel that NetApp is looking to concentrate on in the second phase include disaster recovery, backup and recovery, metroclustering, security encryption, and data assessment.
Springboard Research is of the view that although NetApp is doing well to target the ANZ marketplace by adopting the right channel and product strategy, a strong Microsoft orientation might hinder rather than facilitate the corporate aim of being a dominant player locally and in the region. Players like VMware are key competition to Microsoft in the virtualization sphere and are well-entrenched in the ANZ marketplace. For long term sustained growth, we believe NetApp will need to adopt a vendor-neutral stance and position its products on the strength of its own credentials rather than ride on other names.
NetApp has also announced two key internal promotions, which the company believes will help make it more competitive, grow faster and put it in a good position to make inroads into the market share of other competing storage vendors in the region. The company has announced a promotion for Tom Georgens to the newly created position of Company President and COO. Georgens, who has been tasked to oversee the company’s products and field operations, continues to report directly to NetApp CEO Dan Warmenhoven. The other key promotion is for Tom Mendoza, who held the position of president for nearly 7 years. Mendoza has been promoted to the position of vice chairman, another newly created position that will free him of operational responsibilities and allow him to focus on the company’s customers and culture in order to help NetApp become more “responsive to the market.” Like Georgens, Mendoza will continue to report to NetApp CEO Dan Warmenhoven, and focus on the areas of customer advocacy and channel partnerships, among other critical functions.
In new product news, NetApp is targeting the enterprise segment with software products and services to manage networked storage for firms with existing server virtualization platforms. Aiming to help corporate IT departments manage underutilized and over-provisioned storage resources, NetApp is aggressively promoting this service to its channel partners who can sell and deliver professional services under their own brand.
In another product launch announcement aimed at SMEs, NetApp unveiled StoreVault S550, a 2U rack-mount system that supports 750GB and 1TB drives up to 12TB of storage. Prices start at US$6,000 for 1TB and the product is being proclaimed as a good fit for firms looking for a “more scalable, higher performance device for a rack environment.” Furthermore, the company has stated that this latest SAN system supersedes its 6-Tbyte S500, the company’s first StoreVault product launched in 2006, and is complementary to its S300, which it says is apt for a “budget-challenged or smaller environment.” The company reports that its latest product, the S550, performs 7% better than the S500 and 67% better than the S300. StoreVault S550 does not support SnapManager for Oracle, but comes equipped with SnapManager for SQL Server, and supports SnapManager for Exchange, and also comes with an optional replication feature. This product introduction puts NetApp partly in competition with its own low-end fabric-attached-storage (FAS) product range and with competitors like Dell, EMC, HP and IBM.
Revenue Outlook:
- The company expects consolidated revenue for Q4 FY08 to be between US$915 million and US$945 million.

4. EMC Asserts Focus on Asia For Growth; Appoints Key Personnel to Drive Business From Emerging Industries and Countries; Acquires a Start Up to Boost its Cloud Computing Strategy & Launch Online Services and Announces Massive Price Hike for Mozy Services Within a month of announcing healthy 21% YTY growth in Asia Pacific for Q4 FY07, EMC now asserts an absolute focus on Asian markets. According to EMC, these markets have transformed from the company’s slowest growing region in 2006 to the fastest in 2007. The company confirmed last month that its Asia Pacific region revenue grew 24% during 2007, totalling US$1.46 billion, and that the company was successful in taking market share from rivals like IBM and HP. The company credits this turnaround to its regional leader, Steve Leonard, President of Asia-Pacific and Japan, who was appointed in 2006 to expand EMC’s business in Asia Pacific. Having successfully achieved this goal, Leonard believes that EMC is currently undergoing a period of “very high innovation” and is making history with a record number of recent product introductions. In addition, the company confirmed that, with its latest products it was looking to increase market share in the growing segments of information storage, content management, and information security. The company also hopes to increase profits with its latest offering - flash memory-based drives designed to replace disk drives in its Symmetrix storage array product line.
Springboard Research believes that the storage product and information security market is currently burgeoning in ANZ and EMC is aptly positioned in both segments to capitalize on the opportunities. Furthermore, we believe that the company’s latest product introductions, targeted at the SMB and consumer marketplace, and part of EMC’s five-year market growth strategy for the region, are contributing handsomely to ramping up company revenue in ANZ.
In other significant recent news, EMC announced a series of key appointments with the aim of making inroads into emerging industries, product categories and countries. These strategic business positions have been filled or created to ensure the company continues to drive double-digit growth as it has for the past few quarters.
EMC appointed the former BearingPoint CEO, Harry You, as its EVP, Office of the Chairman. Reporting directly to Joe Tucci, EMC’s Chairman, President and CEO, You is expected to drive the company’s growing presence in new industries, including hosted services, one of EMC’s latest focus areas. You has a strong background in IT Services and Financial markets and is said to be an expert in managing complex and growing global businesses. You resigned from BearingPoint in December 2007, and has previously served as CFO to Oracle and Accenture and has held executive posts at Morgan Stanley, Lehman Brothers and Salomon Brothers.
With a view to creating value for customers and increasing customer satisfaction, EMC has also redefined its NZ operations and has created three new senior leadership positions in its Auckland office to replace the original position of country manager.
The position of country manager was vacated four months ago by Craig Stoddart who held office for 18 months before leaving to join Datacom as a Director for their engineering operations. The gap will now be filled by Robin Whitaker who has been appointed as Country Sales Manager, Vivienne Larsen will be Country Channels Manager and Arron Patterson will serve as Country Services Manager. Whitaker moves from a senior management role within IBM while Vivienne comes from Ingram Micro where she held several leadership roles and director positions in sales and marketing. The third senior management position has been filled internally by Patterson, who has been with the company for three years, and has now been promoted to handle the global services lines for the company including consulting, maintenance, and support. Explaining the move as “necessary”, the company stated that the new positions had been created due to unprecedented growth in the local demand for storage services.
In another noteworthy move, EMC signed a definitive agreement to acquire Pi, a Seattle-based start up that develops software and services for personal information management. The deal is expected to boost EMC’s cloud computing strategy and the company plans to roll out software for online services by the end of this year. Proclaimed as an all-cash transaction, the terms of the deal continue to remain undisclosed but the deal is expected to close by the end of this quarter. Pi, which has a total workforce of 100 engineers spread across US, Canada and India, is currently beta testing its first products, Pi Worx and Smart Desktops, amongst a chosen set of customers (like Amazon.com’ simple storage services). Although Pi will operate as a wholly-owned subsidiary of EMC, these products will be released under its own brand name.
Touted as “next generation software environments”, Pi’s products will allow both end-user consumers and corporate environments to “create, repurpose, store, share, and access personal information.” Pi’s software will be offered as a part of EMC’s cloud computing storage offering by EMC partners looking to provide services based on it.
The founder and CEO of Pi, Paul Maritz will join EMC as President & GM of the company’s new Cloud Infrastructure and Services Division which is expected to be launched post the completion of the acquisition. Reporting to EMC President, Chairman and CEO, Joe Tucci, Martiz will continue to lead the product development for Pi software and other EMC cloud computing offerings, including EMC Fortress SaaS infrastructure and the Mozy online backup service. Prior to founding Pi, Maritz was a key member of the executive inner circle at Microsoft Corp. and held numerous senior leadership positions during his 14-year tenure, including the position of Group Vice President of Platform and Strategies Group at the time of leaving. [The original links for these stories have been given below; please access the same for additional information]
In a related move, EMC has announced a major hike in the prices of MozyPro backup and recovery services, the SaaS offering it launched last month. Quoting the current business model as “not sustainable”, EMC is reportedly changing the pricing scheme from a single licensing model for all systems to separate schemes for desktop and server computers. The company has stated that it has informed all its existing customers about this change and shall “grandfather” them to the current price list. While the existing customers have 30 days to buy additional storage capacity at current prices, the new customers signing up for the service post 1st March this year shall be charged the new price.
Explaining this move, the company has stated that the prices have been raised to “support upgraded features and reliability by large customers”, while the desktop prices remain unchanged. Stating the earlier licensing system as “not practical for the scalability and application demands of a server”, the company is confident of communicating its intent to its current customer base. The company has announced a price hike of nearly three times ($8.95 to $24.45) for a single server license and 10GB of storage, nearly double ($29.75 to $69.75) for 5 servers and 20 GB storage and three times ($329 to $1,014) for 20 servers and 500GB of storage space.
Springboard Research believes that with the anvil of server virtualization across ANZ, the spread of cloud storage shall grow at a solid pace in the coming quarters. EMC has a good spread of data centres across the region and these will help it become a robust player in the arena. In our view, the key to being a preferred vendor is to customise to the local needs; ANZ enterprises are extremely sensitive to where the data is being sent and stored (location of data centre) and the effective data protection laws. Companies will need to account for this, else service adoption rates by enterprises could be scant.
Further, we believe the end-user consumer in the ANZ marketplace has a some degree of sensitivity towards the price points at which the services are being offered. Though the prices for the offered services like Mozy will need to be increased for viability of the business, the accompanying drop-out of existing customers cannot be ignored. These numbers can rise to unsustainable levels unless the company presents a strong justification behind the move.

5. McAfee Reports Q4 FY07 Financial Earnings; Partners with Microsoft and VMware to Offer Virtualization Security McAfee announced its fourth quarter results for the period ending December 31, 2007. The company reported 17% YTY growth and net revenue of US$356 million in Q4 FY07. Among its geographies, Asia Pacific grew the highest (39%), followed by Latin America (30%), Europe and the Middle East (24%), and finally Japan and North America (11%). The increase in profits was supported by the robust sales of Total Protection Endpoint, a strong pillar of McAfee’s security risk management strategy, which grew by an astronomic 112%. In its corporate/ enterprise business, the firm reported a total of 453 deals over US$100,000, including 56 deals of over US$500,000 and 11 deals over US$1 million in the last quarter.
McAfee also registered a 7.47% YTY increase in its sales and marketing operating expenses, which reached US$108.85 million, as compared to US$101.3 million in Q4 FY06. Springboard Research believes this reflects from McAfee’s impressive comeback in the regional marketplace. Not only has McAfee managed a better financial performance over Q3 FY07, the company has also made a higher number of deals. Further a near YTY doubling of the firm’s R&D; operating costs to 13.8% supports our belief that the firm is focusing on introducing products with distinct technical capabilities.
In other important news, McAfee has announced a “broad” relationship with both VMware and Microsoft to offer virtualization security for their respective server virtualization offerings. Further to the announcement with VMware, McAfee has stated that it plans to embed the VMware VMsafe security technology into its upcoming security solution offerings. The company has also signed an OEM agreement with VMware to use its VMware ESX Server technology, 3i. In addition, the company has announced the availability of the beta version of its new Email and Web Security Virtual Appliance which has been built in-house for exclusive use with VMware platforms.
Furthermore, offering a “complete solution for virtualization security” as a part of its strategy, the company has also launched a new Foundstone(R) Professional Services offering Foundstone’s Virtual Infrastructure Security Assessment, proclaiming it as a first-of-its-kind dedicated service for virtualization.
In a related announcement, McAfee has stated that its products run ran on the Windows Server 2008 operating system. As part of its marketing strategy, the company made this public announcement on the same day as of the server launch at an event in Los Angeles. Asserting compatibility with the server operating system for most of its product line, the company will launch the beta version of the first such product, McAfee Network Access Control 3.0 in March this year. The beta version of this product will reportedly support Microsoft’s Network Access Protection (NAP), a policy enforcement platform for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008. The company states that this product offers “extensive health check information”, running up to 600 checks with the ability of creating custom checks and offering centralized management through the company’s ePolicy Orchestrator. Further, the company has also stated that its product, VirusScan(R) Enterprise supports Windows Server 2008 Core and a customised beta release with “unique capabilities” of the same is being planned in March this year.
Springboard Research believes that although the virtualization security risks stand ‘low’ as of date, but the scenario will certainly change rapidly. In a virtualized environment, security threats can originate both externally and internally and need critical care to ensure corporate IT environments do not come to a rude halt. Overlooking these threats, can burden enterprises with the cost of data theft and regulatory compliance issues, among other problems.
We believe it is important for security companies to work with the vendors offering virtualization platforms and ensure the loop holes are blocked even before they are exploited. As mentioned before, we believe that the ANZ region has a burgeoning market for server virtualization and this shall continue to rapidly expand in the coming quarters. This clearly defines the opportunity for security companies with an expertise in virtualization security, the market for which shall continue to flourish in tandem with the parent industry. However, we also believe that the growing server virtualization market will give rise to numerous start up companies specializing in the virtualization security niche – the big security guys will need to watch out for them!
Revenue Outlook:
- Consolidated net revenue for McAfee for Q1 FY08 is expected to be between US$345 million and $360 million.
- Consolidated net revenue for full-year 2008 is expected to be in the region of US$1.425 billion to $1.525 billion.
