1.  McAfee Launches Service to Facilitate Secure Deployment of Virtualization Security
Looking to capture the first movers’ advantage, McAfee’s Foundstone Professional Services launched a service aimed at helping enterprises securely deploy virtualization technologies. Proclaiming it as an “industry first,” McAfee describes the service as part of its strategy to provide complete security solutions for virtual environments and to “educate” enterprises on the topic. The company has outlined a set of security best practices and guidelines that it states are “holistic” enough to cover people, processes and technology and to help customers meet the security requirements of virtual environments.

Describing some of the security requirements and practices of a virtualized environment as “unique,” the company also agrees that many of its security practices overlap with those in the physical environment. Furthermore, promoting its award-winning technology, ePolicy Orchestrator, McAfee states that its services “complement” the security features already built into VMware’s virtualization software and offer the “highest possible security” for the virtual infrastructure.

Further to the announcement, the company has listed several factors that enterprises need to consider while deploying virtualization technologies, including:

 Data Protection
 Protection of Management Controls
 User access with respect to the host
 Nuances of possible attacks on the system
 Effect of hardware or firmware changes confidentiality and integrity
 Management of assets and inventory
 Strategies for contingency planning and disaster recovery

Springboard Research reiterates its belief that currently, virtualization security risks are largely insignificant and offer only a small market for most vendors to compete. However, we expect this market to increase rapidly as the fastest origination of demand for virtualization technology in the Asia-Pacific region is from ANZ. In a corporate IT environment with a predominant presence of virtualization equipment, security threats can arise and should be expected to arise from both external and internal sources. These critical threats demand urgent attention and effecient management to ensure that the corporate IT environment does not suffer an irrevocable loss of sensitive data and the consequent loss of time and money due to prolonged downtime.

We believe that it’s imperative for security vendors to work in tandem with virtualization companies to offer comparable solutions that are sensitive to new and unidentified threats and are capable of detecting and blocking those threats, prior to a potential harm to the environment.
As mentioned in previous months, we believe that the ANZ region has a growing market for server and storage virtualization and this shall continue with an escalating trend in the coming quarters. This definitive trend reflects in the market for security offerings for virtualized environments which shall experience growth in tandem with the parent industry. However, we also believe that this market opportunity will be tapped by start-up firms with a specialization in the virtualization security domain and this trend will need to be closely monitored by the main vendors currently dominating the market.

2.  EMC Highlights Importance of Resellers for Mozy Services in Australia; Announces New Centra Operating System
Within a month of announcing a major price hike for its SaaS offering, MozyPro backup and recovery services, EMC has now put the Australian resellers in high focus. Referring to them as “the initial foundation”, the company has proclaimed definitive plans to use these resellers as an integral part of its ANZ go-to-market strategy. Leveraging the good local reach and partnerships of resellers, the company plans to create awareness for the service and quickly amass trust for the service and the brand. Further to the announcement, an unnamed company spokesperson confirmed the Australia localisation plans, but did not disclose the date when this could be expected by the local users. There is also a lack of clarity on the online backup and recovery service which is yet to be formally introduced in Australia. Company officials have not confirmed any details pertaining to the similarities the service would have to the company’s go-to-market US strategy.

Springboard Research reiterates its paramount belief that localisation is a must for any organisation that is looking at occupy a leadership position in the Australian SMB segment. EMC’s Mozy service targeted at SMBs in ANZ definitely needs a high level of push and local flavour to ensure high sales volumes and visibility in the industry. The company’s stress on the use of resellers is a step in the right direction and definitely a winning strategy for their backup and recovery service. However, as mentioned earlier, we believe the end-user in the ANZ marketplace is price sensitive to some extent and needs to see affable price points to go ahead with the purchase. Though the prices for Mozy service have witnessed a substantial increase last month , a suitable justification for the same can help EMC turn the tide in its favour.

In other news, EMC has announced an upgrade to its Centera Operating System that allows the content addressed storage (CAS) system to archive at ‘double the rate’ in comparison to the previous version and supposedly improves “system flexibility and security”. Dubbed as CentraStar 4.0, the software enables each 500 GB or 750 GB drive to hold up to 25 million objects and is claimed to enable the “self-management and healing” capabilities to operate at a 25 percent faster rate than the previous version CentraStar 2.4. The company is also promoting the software with a host of new administration facilities (listed below) which allow for “higher performance and protection”.

 Additional system logging and auditing capabilities, including the ability to custom configure password complexity rules for enhanced security.
 Capability that allows administrators to segregate, configure and separately manage application, management and replication traffic.

EMC is also expecting this latest improvement to help it’s enVision application users which the company claims, produce security-log records worth multi-millions and billions each day, though each archive is only of 500 bytes on an average. Assuming leadership in the active archive space, the company has stated that since introduction in 2002, EMC Centera has a total customer base of 4,500 customers and has shipped more than 230 petabytes of capacity. The latest version of the software is now being shipped with all new Centera systems and is available as a free upgrade to those currently operating on CentraStar 2.4.

Springboard Research believes that the ANZ marketplace definitely has a large and growing pool of data that needs to be managed and protected. Given the strict compliance issues, rising power bills and the perennial limitation of IT budgets, most enterprises (especially SMBs) are always on the lookout for a solution that helps them to achieve more, enhance performance and most of all, cut costs. EMC’s latest solution has been directly aimed at this sweet spot and definitely intends to ramp up company’s extensive presence in the ANZ marketplace for active archive.

3.  Trend Micro Launches E-Mail Archiving Software Targeted at Australian Mid-Market
Making a foray into the e-mail archiving space, Trend Micro has launched a server-based and Microsoft Outlook plug-in e-mail archiving software that allows users to archive emails and undertake authorized searches. Named ‘Trend Micro Message Archiver’, the software runs on Windows 2003 and is intended to “extend” the half gigabyte per user, per year storage limit that most Australian mid-market enterprises typically fix.

With little experience in the domain, Trend Micro is mindful of the major players like HP, CommVault, Quest Software and Google that are already prevalent in this space and enjoy high market share. However, with this latest software, constructed with/ based on technology acquired in an undisclosed transaction with a German firm, Trend Micro is now aiming to carve out its niche within the ANZ e-mail archiving market.

Further, the company has also announced that the software contains a special feature called Data Guardian that it claims will “prompt midsize companies to take a closer look” at the company’s offering. The company has also stated that this feature, along with other controls, ensures that e-mail archiving meets regulatory compliance requirements for data protection. Available at a cost of USD 33 per user, the company has also made a free trial-download available on its website.

Springboard Research believes that despite the competition, Email archiving is a highly relevant part of Australia’s IT market and this shall definitely remain an upscale trend in the coming years. We believe that with a higher focus on ways to better manage information, this segment will witness a convergence of email and other content archiving offerings. Further, we also believe that this trend will be fuelled by regulatory compliance requirements and other performance and storage issues faced by most business environments in the ANZ marketplace.

4.  Iomega Targets SMBs in ANZ: Introduces REV 120 GB Backup Drives and Expands its Rack Mount Offerings
Iomega has launched the Iomega REV 120 GB Backup drive, which intends to provide the performance of a hard drive with the removability of a tape. Proclaiming it as a “benchmark in smart, sensible backup”, the company is targeting the extensive SMB base in Australia and New Zealand along with other segments like SOHO and remote workgroups. Expected to be available by April this year, the drive will be rolled out in two models, as external USB 2.0 and internal SATA interface, while its ATAPI interface model has been scheduled for mid of 2008.

Positioning the device at its lower price points, the company avidly compares this latest drive with other entry-level tape products like LTO-1 and DAT 160 format tape drives and proclaims “lowest” total cost of ownership (TCO) for “cost-conscious” SMBs. Stating savings from reduced labour, hardware costs, and system downtime, Iomega is touting this drive as being up to five times faster and with at least 20% more native capacity.

Further, quoting it as an “ideal tape-replacement solution” and “zero maintenance” disk, the company states other benefits like a maximum transfer rate of up to 35 Mbps, extensive third-party software support and an estimated 30-year archival life. The company has also claimed that its products, including the earlier generations of REV products are used in a diverse range of industries including graphic design firms, academic institutions, network professionals, etc.

Promoted as a “complete storage solution”, Iomega REV 120 GB Backup Drives come pre-installed with EMC’s Retrospect Express software for automatic backup and disaster recovery while the server solutions come with CA’s BrightStor ArcServe Backup software with disaster recovery.

In a related announcement targeted at the SMBs and SOHO, Iomega has stated its decision to expand its rack mount offerings with StorCenter Pro NAS 200rL Linux Server. Claiming that the solution has a “very good performance at a great price point”, the company maintains that the servers are capable of holding four SATA-II “hot swappable drivers” which can be configured for RAID or JBOD and removed without interruption. Compatible with both Windows and EMC Retrospect Express software, its latest offering is expected to give tape technology a run for its money.

Springboard Research believes Iomega has a decent enough installed base in ANZ to proclaim reasonable market repute and compete with other noted vendors .However, though the company is doing well to target the huge base of SMBs (including SOHO, remote workgroups) in ANZ, , it will need to market its products at more ‘acceptable’ price points. As stated previously, SMBs, SOHO and the household consumers in ANZ are sensitive to price and operate under the constraints of a limited IT budget. Hence, it’s imperative for an organization like Iomega to offer a good bargain to ensure the requisite sales volumes which will help it reach the perceived market leadership status. Also, we do not believe that tape drives are as yet phasing out completely and being replaced with products like Iomega REV 120 GB Backup Drive. Although the market has started to show mixed reactions to tape drives, the sales continue to trickle through for vendors who are still pushing them in the marketplace.
