1.  McAfee Posts Record Q1 FY08 Financial Earnings; Signs Partnership with Acer to Target Consumers; Announces New Risk and Compliance Business Unit; Launches Network Security Suite
McAfee announced its first quarter results for the period ending March 31, 2008. The company reported a record 17% YTY growth and posted net revenue of US$369.6 million in Q1 FY08. Among its geographies, Asia Pacific grew the highest (36%), followed by Latin America (24%), Europe and the Middle East (20%), and North America (15%). The company’s increase in profits was supported by strong sales in its consumer business, which showed revenue growth of 19% YTY, to US$153 million in Q1 FY08. In its corporate business, the firm reported a total of 271 deals worth over US$100,000 each, 37 deals of over US$500,000 each and 8 deals measuring over US$1 million each.

McAfee also registered an impressive 27.11% YTY increase in its sales and marketing operating expenses, which reached US$118.08 million, as compared to US$92.9 million in Q1 FY07. Springboard Research believes this reported increase is a sign of the vendor’s pro-active strategy to capture an increased market share, but has yet to transpire into real-term business benefits for the company. In comparison to its financial earnings from Q4 FY07, McAfee has fewer deals and an imperative need to justify its aggressive marketing expenses.

Further, a YTY increase of 10.3% in the firm’s R&D; operating costs tells us that the firm is now focusing more on customizing its products for the region in order to reach out to its existing and prospective customer base..On the other hand, McAfee’s spending on “General & Admin” costs has reportedly decreased YTY by a nominal 6.9% in Q1 FY08.

In another significant development, McAfee announced its partnership with Acer to target consumers and increase market share for its Security Suite in ANZ. Looking to leverage Acer’s consumer customers, McAfee has decided to OEM its Internet Security Suite and SiteAdvisor (TM) in Acer’s computers that will support 28 languages. Acer’s computer, with McAfee’s OEM software suite, has been scheduled to hit stores in Q2 2008.

Springboard Research believes this partnership will definitely work in favour of McAfee, a company that already has a commanding presence in the region. Although Acer is not the leading computer brand in the region, it is definitely popular and commands a respectable market share, which shall in effect translate to increased market share for McAfee’s security software suite.

In other news, McAfee announced a new business unit dedicated to IT governance, risk and compliance. Termed as the “Risk and Compliance Business Unit,” the business unit will augment McAfee’s position in the security risk management segment and offer products highly relevant to this space. Headed by George Kurtz, the SBU is aimed at enterprises and plans to target IT pain points, which these enterprises deem as most critical to security investment.

Springboard Research believes this is a smart business move by McAfee and one that will help it maintain its growth trajectory. Compliance-related issues are a high investment priority for enterprises in ANZ, and catering exclusively to this sweet spot will add to the bottom line.

Related to the above announcement, the company launched a new version of its risk and compliance product, McAfee Vulnerability Manager 6.5, formerly known as Foundstone Enterprise, and part of the George Kurtz’s Foundstone, Inc. product portfolio. Proclaiming its “agentless policy compliance auditing feature,” the company noted that this latest version is available immediately and aids compliance reporting for regulations such as PCI DSS, FISMA and GLBA, as well as security standards such as ISO 27002.

Another critical move by the security firm was the launch of a network security suite for enterprises and mid-sized businesses. Coined “McAfee Total Protection for Networks,” the suite includes McAfee M-8000 network security platform and McAfee Content Security Blade Server and aims at ending “appliance and product fatigue” associated with deploying, maintaining and managing multiple security solutions.

2.  Trend Micro Publishes Q1 FY08 Results Showing Healthy Growth in Asia Pacific; Appoints Ingram Micro as its Second Distributor in New Zealand; Announces Support for VMware Platform
Trend Micro recently announced its first quarter results for the period ending March 31, 2008. The numbers showed that the company registered a 10% YTY growth and posted net sales of US$244 million (25,604 million yen) in Q1 FY08. Geographically, Japan showed the most growth with 15% YTY in the quarter while overall Asia Pacific registered a healthy growth of 13% YTY in this quarter and contributed 10.5% to Trend Micro’s total revenue, accounting for US$26 million (2,680 million yen).. This was followed by North America at 7% and Europe at 6%. Operating income for Q1 FY08 was pegged at US$79 million (8,338 million yen) and net income at US$43 million (4,594 million yen). In Q1 FY08, consolidated net sales from SMEs was the highest at US$103 million (10,876 million yen), followed by enterprises, which contributed US$70 million (7,362 million yen), and consumer sales at US$71 million (7,455 million yen).

Springboard Research reiterates its belief that Trend Micro is doing quite well in the region, and the company has been able to weather the adverse business conditions caused by the U.S. economic slowdown by driving a stable 10%-plus revenue contribution from the Asia Pacific region. With regard to Trend Micro’s current go-to-market strategy, the company must continue to aggressively promote its storage devices and software in the region and increase those segments’ contributions to overall revenue.

In a New Zealand specific news, Trend Micro has appointed its second local distributor, Ingram Micro thereby terminating the ‘exclusive enterprise distributor status’ of the Auckland-based Soft Solutions. Trend Micro has explained the move as prompted by the need for a greater coverage in New Zealand along with an underlying need for raising the company’s profile locally.,The company is now planning various marketing initiatives with both the distributors including offering rebates for its channel ecosystem.

Springboard Research believes this is a good initiative by Trend Micro that has been for long looking to expand in the region and specifically in the local market. Although much smaller than the Australian market for security products (almost one-fourth its size), NZ market offers a worthwhile opportunity for the security vendors and one that cannot be ignored under any circumstances. We believe, given Ingram Micro’s extensive coverage in ANZ, Trend Micro is highly likely to be received and noted well in the local market .However, the company has to be mindful of offering incentives that stand out from key competition and offer significant advantage for the channel partners; else, the marketing initiatives will fail to deliver the requisite outcomes.

In separate news, Trend Micro announced it would demonstrate its prototype virtualization technology at the 2008 RSA conference in San Francisco, California (U.S.). Promoted as able to make customers’ virtualized environments as safe as physical environments, the company’s new virtualization security solution operates in VMware ESX 3.5 environment and renders the “same level of support” for both environments. Integrating its recently announced VMware VMsage(TM) APIs into its security technology, the company is not only touting cost-savings and operating efficiencies for its customers running virtualized environments, but also improved security. This latest Trend Micro technology is expected to hit the shelves in the second half of 2008.

Revenue Outlook:

 Consolidated net sales for the 2nd quarter ending June 30, 2008 is expected to be US$257 million (25,700 million yen)
 Operating income and net income is expected to be US$71 million (7,100 million yen), and US$41 million (4,100 million yen), respectively.

3.  CA Focuses on Internet Security and Forms New Business Unit and Realigns its Partner Program; Announces a Further cut in its New Zealand staff
Mitigating the mess it created in November 2007 with its restructuring program in the Asia Pacific region, CA is now proclaiming a new start to its regional operations. The company is putting the “finishing touches” on its partner program and has announced key appointments in its newest SBU, the Internet Security division.

Looking to push sales through its channel in the region, CA has reassigned its ANZ Sales Director, George Hladilo, to lead channel sales for the new division’s APJ operations. The division has been created with the aim of pulling together the threat management teams for the home, SOHO and commercial segments, in order to “jointly focus” on the Internet security space. The division will continue to address all consumer segments and will be driven completely by the channel. Aiming to “develop relationships and programs,” Hladilo noted that the Internet Security business unit is staffed with a mix of customer-facing team members and dedicated partner account managers .

Further, confirming the business unit’s solitary structure, Hladilo stated that the division maintains its own profit & loss statements, sales and marketing materials, and is now creating a channel program, which will run parallel to the company’s main partner program. Classifying Internet security resellers into four categories: Platinum, Gold, Silver and Transaction partners, the business unit plans to offer differentiated offerings for the resellers, depending on the level attained.

In a separate news with a supposedly similar intent, CA has announced yet another restructuring effort in New Zealand and has decided to cut its local headcount by 4 thereby reducing local staff numbers to a total of 10. Alongside, the company has also reported a change of position for Stuart Preston, the Country Manager who is now the Channel Sales Director for New Zealand. Justifying the moves as an effort to “expand local channel partner business”, the company is reportedly aiming at ‘increasing the engagement’ between business partners and customers in the country and the region.

Springboard Research believes that although the channel program and the new business division are “thought through” decisions, they will do little to improve CA’s position in the region. In our view, the Asia Pacific region is highly sensitive to market restructuring, and has little tolerance for comebacks, often treating these companies with a higher-than-fair bit of suspicion. We believe CA will need to strategize and undertake very aggressive marketing activities (at a much higher level than they are at currently), and offer a lot more than its competitors to expect the possibility of a comeback in the region.

4.  EMC Posts Robust Q1 FY08 Financial Earnings; Makes Key Acquisition of Iomega
EMC recently announced its first quarter results for the period ending March 31, 2008. The numbers showed that the company registered a strong 17% YTY growth, and posted net revenue of US$3.47 billion in Q1 FY08. Geographically, Latin America showed the most growth with 36% YTY in the quarter while Asia Pacific showed healthy growth of 13% YTY, followed by EMEA at 15%. North America recorded 9% YTY growth.

The fastest growing business segment for the company continued to be VMware, showing a phenomenal growth of 71% YTY, to US$438.2 million, followed by RSA Information Security (13%), Information Storage (12%), and Content Management & Archiving (8%). Specifically under Information Storage, EMC Celerra network-attached storage (NAS) registered maximum revenue growth of 50% YTY, followed by EMC CLARiiON at 19% YTY, and EMC Symmetrix at 8% YTY.

Springboard Research reiterates its belief that EMC’s robust growth over the past quarters can be attributed to the company’s recognition of emerging markets and segments as key to reaching its projected five-year Asia Pacific market growth trajectory. Furthermore, key acquisitions and alliances with local players and channel partners have added immense value to the firm’s marketability.

Along with its robust financial performance, EMC also announced a major acquisition that will augment its position in the consumer, SOHO and SMB segments in the region. The company signed a definitive agreement to acquire Iomega for a total sum of US$213 million, valued at US$3.85 per share. This confirmed deal comes after two earlier rejected offers, valuing Iomega at US$178, and US$205.5 million, respectively.

Iomega has been in the news recently for its search of a suitable partner, and was propositioned by the Chinese company, ExcelStor Great Wall, to acquire a 40% share in the latter. Headquartered in San Diego, California, Iomega’s 2007 annual revenue is pegged at a decent US$336 million with a geographical spread spanning the U.S., Singapore and Switzerland.

With this acquisition, Iomega will make up for EMC’s weak position in the consumer, SOHO and SMB markets and help make its product portfolio more diverse and wide-ranging. The consumer segment has always been lucrative for EMC’s key competition, which has either acquired similar companies in the past or taken the organic route to increasing market share. Identifying an expansion roadmap fuelled by its acquisition, the company stated that these plans would be “in line” with EMC’s focus on countries with a rapidly growing consumer base., The company also stated its vision of allowing home users to connect with an EMC “cloud” to ensure manageability of data.

Under the terms of the deal, Iomega will be placed under EMC’s new Consumer/Small Business Products division and headed by Iomega’s CEO, Jonathan Huberman, who will report to Joel Schwartz, SVP and GM for EMC’s Storage Platforms. Iomega is now expected to cough up US$7.5 million for ExcelStor Great Wall, with whom negotiations are reportedly at an “advanced stage.” In the meantime, the deal with EMC is expected to close in the second half of 2008.

Springboard Research believes this is a stellar deal for EMC that has long been waiting to deepen its roots into the consumer and small business segments. Iomega’s products fit naturally with EMC’s existing consumer/small business product portfolio, consisting of Retrospect and LifeLine software products, and will help EMC offer more refined solutions to the segment. In addition, with their heavy consumer and SMB focus, these products/solutions have been aptly aimed at the ANZ market that is currently experiencing rapid growth in the information storage market. However, we believe EMC will need to strategize effectively and offer its solutions at highly competitive rates, thereby breaking away from its history of NOT pricing products in line with key competition.

5.  Sun Microsystems Makes Key ANZ Appointment; Unveils New Enterprise Security Solution with Accenture; Launches Eco Advantage Program (EAP)
Sun Microsystems has made a key local appointment of Duncan Bennet as Vice President and Managing Director, ANZ. Responsible for the growth strategy of the local business, Bennet has served in the position for three months and has now been confirmed in the spot. Bennet comes handy with a vast ranging experience of 30 years in the technology and software development domain and has also been active with numerous US-based start-up firms.

In separate news, Sun has launched a new enterprise security solution with its(nearly one-year old) partner Accenture. This tie-up was initiated with an envisaged aim of creating security solutions that could be deployed quickly and also ‘provide a high degree of identity assurance’. Referred to as ‘pre-built, implementation ready systems’, the solution has been coined as ‘Accenture Smart Identity Solution’ and is being proclaimed as a “unique” end-to-end system with automated identity management process. Further, covering both physical and logical security systems, the solution uses biometric and smartcard technologies and enables multiple types of multi-factor authentication.
The solution has been launched along with 4 other jointly-developed solutions that are also offered separately:

• The Accenture Enterprise Identity Management Solution- Estimated cost savings- 20 percent.
• The Accenture Solution for Control and Compliance
• The Accenture SOA Jumpstart Solution for Sun Java(TM) CAPS- Estimated cost savings- 40 percent.
• The Accenture Secure SOA Solution

Developed at the Accenture Smart Identity Center, the above solutions have been built using Sun Java(TM) System Identity Management Suite, Sun Java(TM) Composite Application Platform Suite (Java CAPS), Solaris(TM) Operating System and Sun Java(TM) System Portal Server.

Springboard Research believes that the identity management (IdM) market is growing rapidly in ANZ and is attracting a lot of investment from the top-tier software vendors and other smaller startup companies. However, this rampant growth has given rise to intense competition between these vendors with both MNC and local players vying for the same local business. Further, this fight for market share also makes it imperative for these vendors to continuously innovate in order to offer reduced risk and help enterprises comply with regulations.

Aiming to facilitate their partner ecosystem and help them save money, Sun has introduced its new Sun Eco Advantage Program (EAP) that proclaims to help partners build their “own Green IT practices. Offering a host of new tools, resources and training through its Sun Partner Advantage Portal, the new program is envisaged to assist partners with consulting and integration projects. Meant “exclusively” for its partners enrolled under its Sun Partner Advantage Program, this latest program gives them access to Sun’s range of eco services and products.

Describing the program as “special”, Sun is looking to derive immense marketing value from the program as well as offer “tremendous” value for end user customers and partners. Explaining the program, the company has mentioned that the program is meant for partners that have SPARC-based server customers, datacenter integration expertise and consulting capabilities. The EAP includes the following four key components:

• Training
• Sun Eco Assessment Service
• Eco Modeling and ROI Tools
• Implementation Methodologies

Springboard Research reiterates its belief that the “need to go green”, compliance requirements and spiralling energy costs are common pain points for most enterprises in ANZ which are driving them to adopt measures to reduce the carbon footprint by optimising efficiency in their data centres. Further, we also believe this trend will continue to grow in the coming quarters and the fight for market share on the basis of ‘green’ offerings will intensify amongst the likes of HP, Dell and Sun.
