1.  CommVault Posts 19% YTY Growth in Q3 FY09, Makes No Mention of Performance in ANZ
CommVault announced total revenues of US$60.1 million for Q3 FY09, which represented growth of 19% over Q3 FY08 and a decrease of 5% from Q2 FY09. Declaring unhappiness over this growth rate, the company blamed “big deal slippage” for the same. The data management firm’s revenues were driven by a 16% YTY increase in its software revenue, which reached US$31.3 million (however, that declined 11% from Q2 FY09), and a 23% YTY (2% sequential increase) in its services revenue, which measured US$28.7 million. In addition, the company reported a 35% YTY increase in its sales and marketing expenses to total US$31.7 million for Q3 FY09.

Appearing upbeat about its latest release, CommVault Simpana 8 software suite, the company has stated that it expects total revenue for fiscal year ending March 31, 2009 to be in the range of US$241 million to US$245 million.

Springboard Research believes the above growth figures posted by CommVault are extremely healthy and keep the company in good stead. Growth figures nearing 20% in these catastrophic economic times clearly indicate the robustness of the company and its offerings. However, with CommVault having a bullish presence in Australia and New Zealand, the need to offer higher level of details about company’s performance locally is paramount. With channel consolidation gathering momentum in ANZ (and Asia Pacific), the company needs to ensure that it is in continuous dialogue with its partner ecosystem and offers them sufficient incentives to push CommVault’s offerings.

2.  EMC Extends Alliance with Microsoft; Integrates New Capabilities to Celerra Products
At an invitation-only event held in New York, EMC announced its decision to extend its existing alliance with Microsoft, now expected to last through 2011. Both companies proclaimed ‘broader and deeper product interoperability’ in the areas of virtualization, security and content management. The companies also touted this as a ‘powerful combination’, where Microsoft will offer data center solutions, while EMC will share its information infrastructure solutions and consulting expertise. Defining synergy areas, the companies have announced focus on the following areas:
• Deeper focus on storage and protection of information in virtualized environments
• Increased productivity through centralized management of content
• Security solutions to prevent data breaches

While Joe Tucci, chairman, president and CEO, EMC Corp termed this extension as the ‘next phase in this evolution’, Steve Ballmer, CEO, Microsoft Corp stated that the two companies plan to use this decade long partnership to ‘help businesses build extremely efficient and agile IT systems’.

In separate news, EMC has introduced new Celerra unified storage systems. Bearing a range of new features, the four new products, of which three are based on EMC's Clariion line of midrange arrays, simultaneously support NAS, iSCSI and Fibre Channel connectivity. These new devices that also include EMC's Avamar deduplication and RecoverPoint compression technologies in a single machine, are being touted as helping enterprises save up to 50% of disk space. The company is making these devices available ‘free’ to the existing users of Celerra, by allowing such users to download and install these compression applications. Further, proclaiming ‘automated storage tiering’ through these devices, the company is aiming to help reduce storage costs for customers.

These upgraded Celerra systems also include the following plug-ins to help integrate into VMware server virtualization environments:
• VMware Site Recovery Manager,
• VMware View Storage Integration, and
• VMware View Composer

The new products, available directly and through company’s distributors (Datastor in New Zealand), include:
• NS120 – Based on Clariion CX4-120, it scales to up to 120 hard drives
• NS480 – Based on Clariion CX4-480, it scales to up to 480 hard drives
• NS960 – Based on Clariion CX4-960, it scales to up to 960 hard drives
• NS-G8 – is a storage gateway and does not have any integrated storage, but adds unified storage capabilities to any of EMC's Symmetrix or Clariion arrays

Springboard Research believes that EMC has made a good breakthrough in introducing new capabilities in its mid-range arrays and tapping technologies like virtualization to help companies reduce costs. While storage virtualization has found increasing acceptance in mature markets in the recent years, adoption has trailed in the emerging markets and SMBs in Asia Pacific.

In ANZ, adoption trends are maturing and SMBs now see a clear advantage in adopting these technologies of virtualization and de-dupe. However, recent months have seen immense vendor attention on cloud storage which is expected to be the next growth wave among large enterprises in ANZ. Springboard believes that most storage vendors will continue with their two-pronged approach moving forward. While cloud storage will attract high attention (but fail to get mainstream revenue), it’s these product introductions (and enhancements) which will continue to accrue real returns for these vendors in the near future.

3.  Trend Micro Announces Q4 FY08 Results Showing a Catastrophic 27% Dip in Asia Pacific Revenues; Declares Asia Pacific as Biggest Growth Potential; Proclaims Focus on ANZ, Makes Fresh Hires, Facilitates Local Channel Partners
Financials
Trend Micro announced its fourth quarter results for the period ending December 31, 2008. The company posted net sales of US$250 million (24,030 million yen) in Q4 FY08, the numbers showing a decline of 8% YTY. Geographically, Asia Pacific showed an enormous 27% YTY decrease in this quarter, while Europe showed a decline of 24%, and Latin America 28%. North America sales fell 2% YTY in the quarter. Interestingly, the company experienced positive growth only in its home territory (Japan) with a 6% YTY growth. Operating income for Q4 FY08 was pegged at US$76 million (7,330 million yen) and net income at US$50 million (4,854 million yen).

Declaring full year results for FY 2008, the company quoted consolidated sales worth US$985 million (101,707 million yen), thereby representing a growth of 2% YTY. Further, operating income for FY 2008 came in at US$308 million (31,803 million yen) and net income at US$186 million (19,247 million yen).

Revenue Outlook for Q1 FY09, ending March 31, 2009:
• Consolidated net sales are expected to be US$250 million (22,500 million yen)
• Operating income is expected to be US$57 million (5,200 million yen)
• Net income is expected to be US$35 million (3,200 million yen)

In a bid to draw attention away from this dismal performance, Eva Chen, CEO has proclaimed focus on ‘unveiling more Smart Protection Network-powered products, solutions’ in the new financial year and “proving” the company’s expertise around cloud-client architecture to deal with data-stealing malware.

While Trend Micro reported relatively healthy figures in the last quarter, it has not been able to avoid the turmoil this time. Springboard believes in these economically turbulent times when the overall security market is taking a beating and resellers are finding it hard to move boxes from the shelf, companies (and resellers) will need to be innovative in their ways of conducting business and approach the market with end-to-end solutions. Further, Springboard believes that fostering channel ecosystems and offering innovative incentive schemes will also help security vendors tackle the difficult economic conditions.

In separate news, Trend Micro has announced that it believes Asia Pacific to offer the biggest growth potential for the company in the coming years. This significant announcement came during the recently held annual meet for India Channel Partners in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Aimed at sharing the 2009 strategy, the product road map and ideas on how the company can add value to its partners’ business, the meet was attended by the company’s top executives. Commenting on the potential for the company in Asia Pacific, Ms. Eva Chen, Global CEO & Co-Founder, stated ‘immense opportunity in coming years’ and touted the regional market to be the company’s ‘biggest growth potential’ in the coming years.

ANZ in Focus
Claiming higher demand for its Internet security support, services and products in Australia and New Zealand, Trend Micro increased its local (Australia) employee base by 20 percent, The company has stated ‘a definite spike’ in demand for its Smart Protection Network initiative leading to more employees being added across all business sections including major accounts, enterprise, SMB, consumer, channel management, marketing and technical services.

Furthermore, the company announced increased resource allocation in the form of a new major account team to support its top 100 customers. Identifying a growing client base in Queensland, the company also recently opened a new office to cater to the growing business in the state. In addition, the company has setup a dedicated phone support for more than 2000 small business resellers in ANZ.

Defining the above announcement as a “holistic approach across the business”, Dave Patnaik, the recently appointed MD for Trend Micro A/NZ stated that the company has added dedicated channel account managers to service all its global system integration channels and key channel partners. The company is proclaiming an increase in face-to-face interaction with its core group of 40-50 partners and has appointed a new channel marketing manager along with a channel training specialist to provide educational sessions to partners.

In related news, Trend Micro formally announced its global partner program in ANZ at its “Trend Micro Affinity Partner Summit” in the Hunter Valley, NSW in February 2009. Aiming to focus around ‘building effective channel partnerships’ and ‘strengthening sales execution strategies around new technology platforms’, the program has three levels based on revenue (each level gets access to rebates of up to 25 per cent around deal registration, renewals, pushing new product lines and meeting volume targets):
• Affinity
• AffinityPLUS
• AffinityONE

Initially launched earlier in the year to get partner feedback, the program includes rebates like lead referral rebates, product push rebates and volume rebates. In addition, the company also touts “very generous margins for partners” based on the membership level in the partner program. Stressing upon effective execution, directing all deals through partners and giving “more touch points” with the vendor, Patnaik also hinted at the “popularity” of cloud-based computing and Web 2.0 technologies as areas of opportunity. Further, Patnaik also identified the ‘five pillars’ around which the company was aiming to ‘concentrate its efforts’:
• Building a next-generation security framework known as the Smart Protection Network
• 100 percent channel fulfilment
• Impactful marketing
• Better sales execution
• Efficient operations, including more comprehensive partner management and CRM tools

Springboard Research believes Trend Micro’s efforts to bolster its partner ecosystem in ANZ is a ‘knee-jerk reaction’ guided by its recently announced decline in Asia Pacific revenues. However, the company is adopting a ‘pro-active’ approach by further investing in its key markets like ANZ, unlike other vendors who have announced desperate measures to stay afloat and are nearly withdrawing from A/NZ. Clearly, the company has made a sensible business decision by directing all deals through its channel partners and placing more resources for key accounts. Building on high-potential countries, focusing on core strengths, and further strengthening existing relationships is the pertinent way of moving forward and should help vendors like Trend Micro to keep their accounts in good health.

4.  McAfee Posts Strong Q4 FY08 and FY 2008 Financial Earnings and Reports Maximum Growth in Asia Pacific; Announces Layoffs Despite Good Financial Earnings; Increases Focus on SaaS, Forms New Business Unit
In its fourth quarter results for the period ending December 31, 2008, McAfee reported a record 19% YTY growth and posted net revenue of US$424 million in Q4 FY08. Among its geographies, Asia Pacific grew the most (49%), followed by Latin America (39%), Japan (26%), North America (25%) and Europe, the Middle East and Africa (1%). The company’s increase in profits was supported by strong sales in its consumer business, which showed revenue growth of 16% YTY, or US$163 million, in Q4 FY08. In its corporate business, the firm reported a total of 576 deals in excess of US$100,000, including 66 deals worth over US$500,000 and 28 deals measuring over US$1 million.

McAfee also registered a substantial 30.6% YTY increase in its sales and marketing operating expenses, which reached US$142.1 million, as compared to US$108.8 million in Q4 FY07. Further, while the firm’s R&D; operating costs witnessed a YTY increase of 24.2% and reached US$66.6 million in Q4 FY08, spending on “General & Admin” costs decreased by 20.2% YTY in the same quarter.

Announcing consolidated results for FY2008, the company has reported a handsome 22% YTY growth with revenue accounting to US$1.6 billion. While corporate business has shown highest YTY growth of 25%, revenue from the consumer business grew by 18% YTY. Further, the company has also proclaimed ‘double-digit growth’ across both, all its geographies and product segments. Commenting on the strong yearly performance, Dave DeWalt, CEO and President credited this financial success to the company’s decision to invest in ‘new and existing distribution channels’ and diversifying their product portfolio.

Revenue Outlook for Q1 FY09 ending March 31, 2009:
• Net revenue is expected to be between US$440 million to $460 million
• Net revenue for the full-year 2009 was not disclosed by the company

In related news, McAfee has announced that it anticipates undertaking layoffs and consolidating facilities. In a bid to stay lean and keep in good financial health during the new financial year, the company plans to adopt measures like imposing travel restrictions, hiring freezes to keep the headcount flat, mandatory time off, salary freezes, and suspension of certain compensation benefits. Further, the company is also planning heavy consolidation of facilities it received with its latest acquisition (November 2008), Secure Computing. While 50% of Secure Computing's back office resources will undergo consolidation, more than two-thirds of the facilities will be closed.

Springboard Research believes McAfee is one of the very few security vendors which is in the pink of health in the current economic scenario. An almost 50% YTY growth in Asia Pacific definitely puts McAfee in good stead and reflects the company’s dedication towards the region. As stated by its CEO, the company has been religiously focusing on its regional partner ecosystem and has also done well to launch innovative (yet relevant) products. Springboard believes vendors need to open up doors of communication with channel partners and proactively involve the latter in policy decisions regarding partner programs. The need to customize incentives and training programs for the channel in the Asia Pacific region is imperative for vendors which aim to foster a local market for their products.

In separate announcement, McAfee has reportedly created a new business unit to further its Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) offerings and extend its “in-the-cloud” capabilities. Responsible for all McAfee products delivered over the Internet, the new business unit will be headed by a SaaS veteran, Marc Olesen who has been newly recruited solely to promote this venture. Olesen has been designated as the SVP and GM of the SaaS Security Business Unit and will reporting to DeWalt and Christopher Bolin, McAfee CTO and EVP.

Following McAfee products and technologies are currently offered under the SaaS model:
• Artemis
• TrustedSource
• McAfee SiteAdvisor(R)
• McAfee Total Protection Service
• McAfee Email Security Service
• McAfee PCI Certification Service
• McAfee Web Security Service and Foundstone On Demand
• McAfee Web Protection Service
• McAfee Partner Security Service Program

Springboard Research believes hosted security offerings will continue grow at higher-than-average growth rates (than overall security solutions market) in ANZ over the next 2 to 3 years. Though adoption of security offerings delivered as SaaS have previously been chiefly adopted by large enterprises, SMBs in ANZ have also recently started to show higher demand and openness to this mode of delivery. While cost benefits remain the key drivers for these solutions, other benefits like access to specialist skills, ease of management and real-time protection from the latest threats are also being increasingly quoted by enterprises.

5.  Sun Launches Midrange Arrays; Announces Price Hike in Australia
Sun has launched two new midrange, modular disk arrays, Sun Storage 6580 and 6780. Proclaimed to be ‘more scalable, faster and higher performing’, the two products come with up to 32GB cache, 16 4Gbit/sec fibre Channel or 1Gbit/sec iSCSI ports and up to 448 Fibre Channel or serial ATA drives.

Nancy Hart, group manager for primary arrays pronounced the 6780 as Sun’s “new flagship array” in the midrange. Further, while the company also added RAID 6 (protection from dual disk failure) to these new products, they also come with Sun StorageTek Common Array Manager software (to allow administrators to manage any Sun storage system from one console).

Product details:
Sun Storage 6580 Array
o It can scale up to 256 disks or 256TB, and has eight 4Gb FC host ports, and 8GB cache
o It also comes along with 16 expansion trays per controller, which allows users to intermix SATA and Fibre Channel drives
o The Sun Storage 6580 Array controller unit, without disk drives, is available at a list price of US$59,995

Sun Storage 6780 Array
o It has twice as many I/Os per second as its predecessor, the 6500 class of arrays, and scales to 448 disks or 448TB.
o It has eight or 16 4Gb FC host ports, 16GB cache, and 28 expansion trays per controller, and also allows an intermix of SATA and Fibre Channel drives.
o The Sun Storage 6780 Array controller unit is available at a list price of US$89,995

In separate news, Sun Microsystems has announced its decision to increase product prices by 15 percent in Australia. Explaining the decision, the company has also released an official statement claiming that ‘it had been forced to introduce the price hike due to exchange rate fluctuations’. Effective from February 24, the company has provided partners with 30 days price protection. Further, the company has promised to bring down the prices when the exchange rate returns “to a more normal level”.

Springboard Research believes that while this move is much needed in order to ensure that Sun is able to sustain local operations in ANZ, it is not likely to go down well with its local partners. Historically, Sun’s products have been known for their high-end price tag and on that count have been loathed by many in the industry. This has also been one of the key reasons for Sun losing out in the SMB segment and not being able to push its products solely on the Open Source platform. Lastly, with IT spending expected to go down for most enterprises (owing to the downturn), it is unlikely that Sun will be able to push local sales post its decision to increase prices.
