1.  EMC Loses Top Executive in NZ and Expands Relationship with Global Storage to Tartget Australian SME
In a surprising move, Craig Stoddart, the country manager for EMC New Zealand resigned end of last month citing personal reasons for the exit. He had joined EMC’s NZ operations in early 2006 from the systems integrator Axon where he served as the GM, Sales & Service since 2004. Stoddart’s stint with EMC NZ has lasted less than two years and until a replacement is found for him, David Webster, Managing Director of EMC Australia and New Zealand will be acting as EMC’s NZ’s country manager.

In a separate development, EMC has expanded its 18-month-old relationship with integrator ‘Global Storage’. Targeting SMEs in Australia, EMC is offering two managed disaster recovery and backup services, EnvironmentReady and DataReady via this alliance. These managed services are based on EMC’s data de-duplication software Avamar that it had acquired for $165 million in November 2006.

Springboard Research believes that these services have been aptly targeted in the Australian marketplace that has a sprawling SME presence. These services that can be implemented in a remote environment are likely to address the disaster recovery and backup requirements of SMEs that mostly don’t have a separate budget for such IT requirements and often struggle to implement the costly solutions. Further, we believe that along with high implementation costs, lack of knowledge and understanding about the latest technology to be another likely reason these SMEs continue to use obsolete and labour-intensive technology.

Global Storage CEO David Duncan also confirmed that the company has added additional sales staff to assist with the new services and contracts for 3-7 Terabytes have already been signed with a few law firms. Further, he has declared focus on real estate agents, city councils, and other similar small businesses or agencies that look for capacities in the range of 100GB up to 3-5TB.

Along with the above announcement, EMC also introduced its Avamar Virtual Edition for VMware and pre-packaged EMC Avamar Data Storage Systems offerings that supports all VMware backup modes and can support up to 1TB of de-duplicated backup capacity. This solution targeted at the virtualization market, is based on data de-duplication software, Avamar and is likely to be shipped in November 2007 at a price of US$17,000 per post-de-duped TB of data.
EMC is expecting this offering to help companies reduce their reliance on physical tape-based backup operations and off-site data movement. Lastly, the company is touting ease of deployment, not having to buy additional hardware and remedy to bandwidth constraints as the key factors to the likely success of this new offering.

2.  McAfee Launches Security Risk Management Solution and Announces Security Innovation Alliance
McAfee has launched ePolicy Ochestrator 4.0 (ePO), an integrated security management and compliance platform that offers businesses to manage security from a single console across multiple endpoint security products. The company is targeting the Australian Mid-Market and Enterprises space and is touting to streamline IT security management with ePO’s feature of reporting and auditing on third party products and reducing the clutter on client and administrator desktops.

ePolicy Ochestrator 4.0 (ePO) became available in the market on 25th September and is being offered free to McAfee customers with an existing maintenance contract. Further to the development, McAfee announced that its security risk management offerings, including ePO, are fully compatible with virtual environments and the company is working with partners on new and innovative security offerings.

In a move to facilitate third party security vendors integrate their offerings with ePO, McAfee has launched the Security Innovative Alliance (SIA) that provides a series of application programming interfaces (APIs) and software development kits. Positioning ePO as the cornerstone to this alliance, McAfee is touting to work with its partners to deliver integrated, heterogeneous security and compliance optimization.

Springboard Research believes that although McAfee’s initiative to achieve higher interoperability with other security vendors is aptly defined, however, is likely to receive a lukewarm reception with the competing firms seeing little gain by confirming to McAfee’s standards. With vendor-controlled APIs having a history of failing to attract industry-wide support, the success of McAfee’s SIA is likely to hinge on the response of smaller niche players that are likely to receive higher gain from this alliance. Lastly, we believe that with virtualization gaining momentum in ANZ, McAfee could judiciously use ePO’s compatibility with virtual environments as a tool to promote its latest partner initiative.

3.  Sun Microsystems Likely to Trail the Inorganic Growth Path
Progressive efforts to put Sun Microsystems back into the limelight were pronounced when CEO Jonathan Schwartz hinted at driving revenue and profit growth through key acquisitions and new partnerships in an analyst brief held last month in New York. He also commented that continued spending on IT infrastructure by business customers is likely to be the key growth stimulator for the company. Giving further details, Schwartz indicated that Sun is likely to acquire software companies and establish fresh alliances with companies like Juniper Networks to further expand its presence in the enterprises space.

In tandem with the above announcement, Sun declared a definitive agreement to acquire intellectual property and assets of Cluster File Systems, including the Lustre File System that will be pivotal for Sun in providing an end-to-end High Performance Computing storage solution. The transaction is expected to be completed in the beginning of Sun’s second fiscal quarter starting October 1, 2007.

In a similar development, Sun announced a strategic alliance with Microsoft to offer Windows Server 2003 on its 64-bit servers. Further, the two companies will collaborate on IPTV and interoperability between virtualisation of Windows Server on Sun’s Solaris OS and vice versa. This alliance is also indicative of joint solutions by the duo in the near future when Sun introduces its Galaxy Server line and Microsoft launches Windows Server 2008. Interestingly, John Fowler, EVP Sun Systems Group, noted during a conference call that 100 percent of Sun’s customers run both Solaris and Windows in their environments.

Springboard Research believes that Sun’s intention to expand presence in the enterprises space is a good business decision and shall help the company keep to its planned growth curve. Further, in our view, many enterprises in ANZ are increasingly looking to curb their IT expenditure by using hosted applications and innovative outsourcing arrangements. This trend is indicative of an increasing demand for data centres operated and maintained by IT infrastructure vendors, hence a good opportunity for Sun Microsystems.
