1.  CommVault Publishes Q2’08 Financial Results and Announces Key Alliance with Riverbed Technology
CommVault has announced strong financial results for Q2 of fiscal 2008 with total revenues to $47.4 million, an increase of 29% over Q2’07 and 8% over Q1’08. This growth by the data management firm has been driven by a healthy 31% YoY increase in its software revenue to $26.6 million and a 27% YoY increase in services revenue to $20.9 million. Interestingly, the firm has reported a 42% YoY increase in its sales and marketing operating expenses that total up to $23.1 million for Q2’08.

Springboard Research believes that most of this growth for CommVault has been driven by its data management suite Simpana that takes a singular approach to data protection, replication and archive. Further to our view, the firm has been quick to establish key partnerships and alliances’ using its latest launch, CommVault Simpana 7.0 that it believes increases the firm’s competitive differentiation. Keeping Simpana 7.0 as its mainstay, the firm is looking to expand business around information management products and services.

Following its new market strategy, CommVault has announced a key partnership with Riverbed Technology to speed data performance and reduce backup and replication time significantly (up to 34 times). Targeting both enterprises and SMEs, the duo is touting to deliver high-performance data protection while eliminating the need for tape drives in branch offices with the combined solution. Riverbed Technology officially launched their Australian presence in October 2005 with a sales & support team and has since enjoyed significant presence in the region. The firm’s key product, Steelhead WDS [Wide-area Data Services] appliances is touted to deliver fast application performance while avoiding bandwidth saturation.

Springboard Research is of the view that this combined solution has been aptly targeted in ANZ to clients currently facing problems of stack space unavailability and increasingly managing the remote needs of employees. Hence, the need to consolidate IT and accelerate applications has critical for those enterprises that are looking for progressive ways to increase productivity from a mobile workforce. Further, these issues have a stronger impact on SMEs which typically do not have a substantial IT budget and often struggle to implement the costly solutions.

Both CommVault and Riverbed have become strategic partners in each others’ partner programs to deliver the joint solution. The duo will be using co-marketing, sales programs and other technical resources from their partner programs to push sales in the region and globally.

2.  EMC Enjoys a Strong Third Quarter in Fiscal 2007: Reports 17% YoY Growth, Wins $40 million Project from Telstra, Unveils new Virtualization offerings for Australian SMEs and Announces Key Acquisitions.
EMC has reported a healthy consolidated revenue of $3.3 billion for Q3 of fiscal 2007, an increase of 17% over Q2’07. This growth has been observed with a 9% YoY increase in its systems revenue, and a 25% YoY increase in both software and services revenue. Although the Asia-Pacific region for the firm has observed an 18% YoY increase, however remains to be fastest growing in the current fiscal year at 26% YTD revenue growth. The fastest growing business segment for the firm remained VMware showing a phenomenal growth of 90% YoY increasing the revenue to $354 million, followed by Content Management & Archiving at 27%, RSA Information Security at 22% and Information Storage at 8%.

Springboard Research is of the view that EMC’s move to target Australian SME’s via their disaster recovery and backup services has substantially fuelled the growth of its Information Storage subsidiary. These services have been aptly targeted to the sprawling SME base in Australia. Further, as reported in another story this month [refer to Top Story on CommVault] Australia is currently facing the problem of stack space unavailability and managing remote needs of employees. Hence, EMC’s initiative to help these SME’s reduce reliance on physical tape-based backup operations is a step in the right direction.

We also believe that the record growth for VMware is a result of the firm capitalizing on the virtualization wave that is currently experiencing healthy growth in ANZ. This has largely contributed to EMC’s overall growth in the region and shall continue to do so in the forthcoming quarters. We believe that with an installed base of 15% servers in ANZ, more than 30% of the large-scale Australian enterprises are currently migrating to the new technology per annum. Further, rival Microsoft’s latest hypervisor Windows Server Virtualization package (WSV) suffering yet another RTM [Release to manufacturing] date delay is a welcomed news for VMware. The company now gets another 4 to 6 quarters to further expand its presence in the region before WSV starts to eat into the competition’s market share.

In line with the above analysis, EMC has unveiled three new VMware Infrastructure product packages targeted at the SMEs and are expected to be available later this year. These bundles are based on the latest release of VMware Infrastructure, a 3rd generation, production ready virtualization suite. New products and features in VMware Infrastructure ideal for SMEs include VMware ESX Server 3i, VMware Guided Consolidation and VMware Update Manager. The company has revealed the following 3 bundles:
• VMware Infrastructure 3 Foundation Accelaration Kit, available at a list price of $2,995.
• VMware Infrastructure 3 High Availability Accelaration Kit, available at a list price of $5,995.
• VMware Infrastructure 3 Midsize Accelaration Kit, available at a list price of $14,495.

In a separate development, EMC has won a $40 million contract from Telstra replacing rivals Network Appliance and IBM. This contract covers the deployment of storage systems in Telstra’s core infrastructure and will help the telco revamp its IT and reduce its storage systems from 1100 to 800. This contract was awarded by Telstra as a part of its technology transformation program that also includes replacement of many legacy systems. Springboard Research believes this to be a key development that amplifies the trend towards smaller footprint and higher utilization of network storage equipment by enterprises in ANZ. Spiralling power bills have fuelled the need to drive operational efficiency and this trend has now become a wide-ranging concern for all enterprises across the Asia-Pacific region. Hence, we expect to see similar developments in the region driven by the critical need for enterprises to achieve higher power/cooling efficiency.

EMC has announced two key acquisitions, Voyence and Berkeley Data Systems to extend its products and services portfolio. The firm did not disclose the purchase price for both these acquisitions and has commented that they will not impact its revenues or EPS (earnings per share) for 2007.

With the former acquisition of Voyence, EMC has bolstered its position in the ITSM marketplace by adding solutions for managing IT service delivery, network compliance, serviceability and security. VoyenceControl, the network configuration and change management solution by Voyence uses ITIL as a methodology for achieving visibility and control to ensure the reliability of IT-based business services. Voyence will be fully integrated into EMC’s Resource Management Software business unit.

The latter acquisition of Berkeley Data Systems adds Mozy Online backup and recovery services to the firm’s existing set of similar solutions for the enterprises. This acquisition bolsters EMC’s position in the consumer, SOHO (small office home office) and the SME space. This move further echoes Springboard Research’s view on the current Australian problem of managing remote needs of employees. We believe that this acquisition will help EMC keep to its plans for the SaaS space and offer SMEs and consumers a cost effective and safe way of managing information. We expect that EMC will use this acquisition to introduce new and robust products in early 2008.

3.  McAfee Posts Q3’07 Financial Earnings, Announces Key Acquisitions and Bolsters its Sales Leadership
McAfee has posted total net revenue of $322 million for Q3 of fiscal 2007, indicating a 12% YoY growth. This healthy growth for the firm has been balanced growth in both corporate and consumer segments, that reported revenues of $186 million with an 11% YoY growth and $136 million with a 14% YoY growth, respectively. The firm has also reported an overall 25% YoY growth in its international business. The Asia Pacific region observing YoY growth of 38% after Latin America at 72% and Japan at 41%. The firm has also announced a total of 271 deals over $100,000, including 22 deals over $500,000 and 8 deals over $1 million. Surprisingly, the firm has reported a 2.7% decrease in its sales and marketing operating expenses from Q3’06 that now totals up to $90.8 million, down from $93.3 million in Q3 last year.

Springboard Research believes this reported decrease in the Marketing and Sales operating expenses conveys much about the firm’s focus for the coming quarters. The firm is evidently diverting more resources towards Research & Development that reported 12% YoY growth, increasing total operating costs for this quarter to $54 million from $48 million in Q3’06. We also believe that the firm is looking to drive higher operating efficiencies in the wake of increasing compliance costs that have been reported with a 38%YoY increase for the past quarter.

Springboard Research views these healthy quarter earnings for McAfee as a result of numerous well planned corporate and product decisions. On the corporate front, the decision to grow inorganically via key acquisitions has bolstered McAfee’s growth and has added new capabilities to its product portfolio. The firm has recently announced the definitive agreements to acquire SafeBoot B.V. and ScanAlert for $350 million and $51 million, respectively. Springboard Research believes these acquisitions to bolster McAfee’s market share in ANZ that is currently experiencing strong growth for a complete solution that handles multiple tasks rather than individual software that deals with only one particular security concern.

The former acquisition of SafeBoot B.V. adds fully integrated end-point security and content encryptions solutions to complement McAfee’s existing portfolio of ePolicy Orchestrator 4.0 and McAfee’s Data Loss Prevention to offer data protection solutions. This acquisition also helps McAfee enter the mobile security market and offer comprehensive suite of integrated device protection and data security solutions which is a growing area for the firm. SafeBoot, with more than 4,200 customers of which 23% are in Asia-Pacific, launched their ANZ operations in May 2007 with offices in Melbourne and Sydney and appointed David Jordan as the ANZ Manager. The company had then laid focus on building revenue via the company's reseller channel, aiming for a 100 per cent channel sales model by 2008. McAfee has also announced the opening of a new Data Protection product business unit following the close of acquisition in Q4’07. The firm is likely to combine its Data Loss Prevention solutions in this new business unit that will be headed by Gerhard Watzinger who will report to McAfee CEO Dace DeWalt.

McAfee has also decided to acquire ScanAlert, a web application security vendor for $51 million. ScanAlert is a paid service that scans websites for security vulnerabilities and checks for up-to-date patches in e-commerce applications. McAfee plans to integrate this service in its Web Security Group responsible for producing the firm’s Site Advisor service that recently reached the 90 million download milestone.

Other corporate level developments include two key executive level appointments. Michael DeCesare has been appointed as the Executive Vice President of Worldwide Sales Operations. Under his new designation, DeCesare will be responsible for worldwide sales, channels, sales engineering, consulting services and education services and will report directly to the firm’s President and CEO, Dace DeWalt. DeCesare joins McAfee from EMC, where he was appointed as the Senior Vice President, Field Operations. The other appointment has been of Roger King as the Executive Vice President of Worldwide Channel Operations, a newly created position to strengthen the firm’s channel operations.

On the product front, we believe McAfee has done well to address the regional (ANZ) needs and has hence managed to establish a strong presence. As reported last month, the firm has aptly targeted the Australian mid-market and enterprises space with its latest offering, ePolicy Orchestrator 4.0 (ePO) and is touting its compatibility with virtual environment as its mainstay. Further, the company’s Security Innovation Alliance to expand its partner ecosystem and work closely with them has also been of help to achieve the strong financial earnings in the third quarter of 2007.

4.  Sun Microsystems Unveils Project Blackbox and Mergers Server & Storage Product Teams
Sun Microsystems has merged its Server and Storage product teams to form the Systems group that focuses on the convergence of computing, storage and networking. The firm now plans to be highly focused on being a multiplatform storage provider and expects most of its futuristic growth to be driven by the open and general source platforms which it believes is the future of the IT world. Springboard Research does not agree with this approach. A spokeswoman for Sun who refused to divulge other details of this merger has confirmed that Executive Vice President John Fowler will lead the new business unit and Jon Benson, Senior Vice President of Storage will report to him. Springboard Research believes this move will do little to improve Sun’s competitive stance and other vendors will continue to keep their market share and play by their strengths.

This move supports Sun’s last year change in go-to-market strategy when it shifted to a multipurpose approach with the release of three general purpose servers, including Sun Fire x4500 which was the firm’s first general purpose storage system. Schwartz has also commented that the new systems team will continue to develop and sell standalone storage and networking. This realignment comes in just a month after Sun hinted at driving revenue and profit growth through key acquisitions and new partnerships.

Springboard Research believes that although Sun’s CEO endorses a futuristic vision and is striving hard to put the firm’s performance back on track, however, this strategy is quite contrary to what other market players are pursuing. Further, we although believe that Sun’s latest move might find it more opportunities to cross-sell or up-sell to end users, however proposing a Sun exclusive data centre in the ANZ marketplace that is already inundated with choice, seems a bit naive.

In a separate development, Sun has unveiled its ‘Project Blackbox’ in the Asia Pacific region last month and plans to officially launch it worldwide on November 20 this year. Sun’s latest mobile data centre is scheduled to travel other Asia Pacific cities of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Sydney between October 22 and December 20, 2007. Revealing details about the mobile data centre, Sun proclaimed that all the typical data centre equipment have been stacked in a standard shipping container and can support performance of 146 teraflops, hold 2 petabytes of storage and 7 terabytes of memory. The company is promoting its Blackbox at a starting price of US$750,000 and is touting its configuration flexibility between servers, storage and other equipment and its virtualization capabilities as its mainstay.

Sun is aggressively promoting the 8 to 10 times smaller footprint of its Blackbox and is looking to drive sales in the region based on its higher efficiency (power consumption) which the company claims is 40% more than a traditional data centre. Further, claiming that Blackbox can withstand earthquakes measuring up to 6.7 on the Richter scale, the company has mentioned that the mobile data centre can only function while stationary and can also run on diesel power generators.

Springboard Research believes that Sun’s Project Blackbox has a lot to offer and is likely to do well in the region. Sun is doing well to promote its Blackbox on data centre issues of high carbon footprint, possible higher performance ratios, unavailability of stack space and managing remote needs of employees which are the pain points for most organisations in the region.
