1.  Sophos Reports Fiscal Year 2008 Financial Results; Plans for a Second IPO; Hires from Rival Firms
In its latest financial announcement for FY08, Sophos reported total billings of $213.9 million, representing an impressive growth of 28% over FY07. The company proclaimed “robust growth” across all geographies, with “excellent performances” in North America and Japan. Crediting enhancements to its overall product line for its FY08 results, the company also noted “significant new accounts with a broader product line” and well-built channel programs as reasons for its successful fiscal year.

While few details have been divulged about the company’s performance in Asia-Pacific (and ANZ), the strength of the company’s overall go-to-market can be felt from its robust growth figures. Springboard Research believes that although Sophos has a respectable stand in ANZ (and APAC) backed by a good set of products, it is not doing enough to adopt a proactive stance in the region and also has potential gaps in its channel partner program. The need for vendors to have positive financial health locally in the region is considered an important factor by enterprises deciding to partner them; hence the need for Sophos to reveal its local numbers.

In related news, the company announced its intent to launch an IPO. As its second official attempt, the company is not looking to “push” the IPO and unlike in its previous attempt, has also expressed interest in going public in the United States rather than in the UK. As reported, the company currently has about US$140M in cash assets on record, up from US$90M as recorded in November 2007 (when the company had earlier decided to go public).

Sophos has also recently hired staff from rival firms, Trend Micro and Symantec. With an eye on building brand awareness in the UK and the rest of the world, Sophos appointed former Trend Micro Director Martin Johnson to the post of director of corporate marketing, while former Symantec executive Jill Murray has been named to the new position of EMEA marketing director. Stating web advertising as a top priority, Johnson noted the need for the company’s web presence to reflect its product specification. Further, acknowledging partner concerns that Sophos’ partner infrastructure, including its partner portal, lacks sophistication, Johnson also plans to ramp up this infrastructure to the “next level.”

2.  Sun Microsystems Announces Series of Leadership Changes; Reveals plans to Target Enterprise IT market with Flash SSD Product Line
In view of the strong growth rates in a few countries like India and other emerging markets such as South and Eastern Europe, Latin America and Greater China, Sun Microsystems has formed a new “Emerging Markets sales geography.” As part of its plan to rejuvenate its competitive stance and bolster revenue from emerging markets, Sun appointed Peter Ryan as EVP of Sun's Global Sales and Services organization. Ryan will report directly to Sun's President and CEO, Jonathan Schwartz.

Interestingly, at the beginning of June 2008, the company publicly announced that this region would be led by Denis Heraud, who was appointed Sun's SVP of Asia Pacific and was to report to Ryan. However, within the same month, Heraud was replaced by Lionel Lim to lead the region in the same capacity, and with the same reporting structure. However, soon after Lim’s appointment, to the industry’s surprise Sun once again replaced the candidate for this position. As per the latest news (which will be covered next month in detail), Gan Boon San has been appointed as President of Sun’s Asia South GEM (geographically established market), replacing Lionel Lim. Boon San was previously the COO of Sun Asia South.

Springboard Research believes that this staff juggling indicates Sun’s indecisiveness about its latest effort to target the emerging markets. While this news may have limited direct bearing on ANZ, it does offer strong indications about the company’s overall lack of both a strategic viewpoint as well as the ability to ensure stable staffing. With the high volume of employee churning (especially top-level) currently doing the rounds at Sun, similar changes for ANZ could well be expected. Further, we believe that company politics could have also has done much harm and hence resulted in such drastic top-level changes. Ironically, the executive staff appointments were initially supposed to be focused on unlocking more opportunities in the region, especially from those countries where Sun currently runs its Open Source Initiative.

Targeting the Enterprise IT market, Sun has announced its decision to introduce new Sun Solid State Disks (SSD) and integrate them in its storage systems and servers. To be introduced under its Eco Innovation products and services program, the latest offering is proclaimed to have greater application performance and will integrate open source technologies including Solaris Operating System (OS), Solaris ZFS and others. Currently, Sun ships Solaris ZFS software which has been optimized for SSD technologies through the OpenSolaris community and is touted to offer “3x better performance at one-fifth the energy consumption” of conventional spinning disk offerings.

Describing the flash SSD as “the most exciting innovation in over a decade”, John Fowler, EVP, Systems Group also stated his expectation of the technology being a prominent presence in servers by mid-2009 and offering “far greater” overall system performance and energy efficiency. Sun plans to introduce a 32GB flash storage drive in the second half of 2008 and make flash storage “an option for nearly every server” produced by the company. Further, mentioning Intel as one of its partners, Fowler also mentioned that Sun would “lure customers with low prices” starting at $1,000 for its 32-gig drive.

Springboard Research believes that while flash SSD definitely offers enterprises higher advantages as well as saving on energy costs ,, its steep price will deter its widespread use. Interestingly, an SSD can cost an astronomical 20 times higher than the conventional hard drive of a similar capacity. While there exists competition such as EMC in the same space, the comparatively high price itself raises doubts about the mass adoption of this technological innovation.

3.  EMC (RSA) Appoints New Managers in Australia; Launches SecurID Display Card; Faces a Backlash from Partners in ANZ; Partners with Acxiom for Secure, Data Recovery Technology
In a move to further strengthen its ANZ presence, RSA (security division of EMC) has made 4 key local appointments. The first of them is the appointment of Daniel Zatz as a Business Development Manager for Strategic Alliances. Zatz comes to EMC from VeriSign's Managed Security Services business in Asia Pacific and was previously with Computer Associates' eTrust Security software brand in ANZ.

The other appointment has been of “Security sales specialist” Mason Hooper who has an experience of more than 16 years in companies such as Novell, Dimension Data and Fujitsu. Ian Farquhar who has been given the post of Senior Technical Consultant, Data Security Solutions comes to EMC from Cisco’s worldwide security services practice where he was a network security consultant. Last appointment has been of Daniel Gardner as the Inside Sales Customer Accounts Representative. Gardner comes from Corporate Express where he was working as an IT account manager.

In a noteworthy news, RSA has launched the RSA SecurID® 1100 Display Card globally. Targeted at financial institutions, the company described this is an “event-based, one-time password (OTP) authenticator in a flexible card form-factor” that will help customers with secure online transactions with two-factor authentication. Proclaimed to allow an optimum balance between cost, end-user convenience and security, RSA SecurID® 1100 Display Card is the latest addition to the company’s Identity Assurance solutions portfolio.

The offering, aimed “especially” for countries with limited online fraud protection, is powered by RSA Authentication Manager 7.1 software and RSA SecurID Authentication Engine, and is used in conjunction with RSA Transaction Monitoring, an online fraud detection and management solution. Further, the company also allows for customization of the offering - the logo of the issuing financial institution can be embedded to reinforce brand value and can also be customized to give personal information about the individual consumer.

Springboard Research believes online fraud protection is a top-of-the-line concern for most banking CIOs in ANZ (and the region) and is poised to be a huge market in the next 2-3 years. While online fraud cases are rampant in the region, most countries in the Asia-Pacific have few measures to arrest them. Although ANZ is a comparatively matured adopter and banks have some sort of measures to curb these illegal activities, local users remain under a constant threat from hackers who are smart enough to continuously change their modus operandi and attack in unique ways. With a critical need to control such incidents where consumers lose large amounts of money, such offerings by EMC will definitely be worthwhile for most financial institutions. While restoring consumer confidence is critical for these institutions, it is equally important for them to ensure that the deployment costs for such technologies remains affordable. While EMC’s latest offering is touted to hit this spot perfectly, competition from Symantec and the others will not make it easy to expand locally.

In another ANZ-specific news, EMC has reportedly faced a backlash from its local partner community post its local government Licensing Deal with Gen-i under which Gen-i offered local government customers significantly reduced pricing for VMware software. In addition to softer price points for VMware software, Gen-i’s offer also included training from Gen-i subsidiary Auldhouse and other value-added services.
The charge of wrong-doing which still remains unsubstantiated was reportedly initiated by a few of the local integrators who approached the Commerce Commission. Interestingly, a few of those who’ve expressed concern over the deal have also also admitted that the act of approaching the Commerce Commission is largely irrelevant and that they do not hold Gen-i guilty. It’s mostly VMware which has had to face embarrassment over the issue and is being blamed for taking a “silly decision” without considering the impact on the local channel. While Gen-i has explained it’s stance and stated this deal as an “example of the company’s strategic approach to client relationships”, EMC (VMware) refused to comment on the deal and has stated that the “matter is commercially in confidence”.

Lastly, EMC also announced a partnership with Acxiom to deliver on-demand data recovery technology. As per the announcement, Acxiom’s Online Backup-X, based on EMC's Mozy remote backup service, helps its clients and prospects save money and “countless hours of recovery time”.

4.  Trend Micro Bets Big on ‘in-the-cloud’ Architecture; Launches New Products Targeted at SMBs in ANZ
Trend Micro has unveiled its latest offering - ‘in-the-cloud’ network service. Claiming to speed up its reaction to “zero-day threats”, the company plans to store pattern files in its network and not load them onto the client devices. Coined as the Smart Protection Network, this latest cloud architecture being currently finalized, is touted as the first in its category.

With the launch of this service designed to entrench the network with multi-layered protections, the company aims at arresting threats at their source in the cloud and thus “combat cybercriminals”. Though the patent on this technology is still pending, the company is hoping its latest approach will help to “lighten bandwidth consumption” on customers’ networks and endpoints and provide protection against a host of malware. This technology was first introduced by the company as its ‘Web threat protection strategy’ in March 2007 and has now been rechristened as, Smart Protection Network.

Containing three separate databases that will handle email, web and file threat data, the architecture will delete or quarantine those files (email and others) that are not found to be genuine by Trend Micro's servers. These requests will be sent to the servers by the software sitting on the client computer that the company claims is 70% smaller in size than conventional security platforms. This architecture that has been researched since 2005 under the guidance of CTO, Raimund Genes, updates the company’s servers within 15-30 minutes of new malware being identified.

Initially targeted at large enterprises, the company plans to roll out editions for SMBs as well, which it recognises as a big potential market for its products. Hoping to release it in the last quarter of this year, the company plans to launch it on a monthly subscription basis, though the final prices have still not been made available.

In related news, Trend Micro has announced a slew of products targeted at the SMBs in ANZ, including desktop and server security products. The company’s existing product line has been re-branded as “Worry-Free Business Security 5.0”. This re-branding exercise comes post the addition of upgrades to its client/server messaging security product line which now includes behaviour-based anti-malware monitoring and an option for in-the-cloud web security services.

The offering is currently available in two versions, standard and advanced; while the former provides e-mail messaging and Web security for Microsoft-based PCs and servers, the latter also offers a way for the business to redirect mail to Trend's in-the-cloud, antispam service. There also exists an additional option for enterprises to use the company’s Web Reputation Services for advice on specific websites.

Trend Micro has also embedded the security software in a third-party desktop software product to provide a security threat-protection mechanism; Intuit's Quickbooks financial and accounting package used by SMBs currently has this option. The offering is currently available for purchase at US$32.26 per user for a one-year license of the standard edition, with the advanced edition costing US$59.32 per user.

Springboard Research believes this is a good business move by Trend Micro that has now been achieving steady financial health in the region. While the company has had technologies like in-the-cloud malware analysis in its repertoire for a while, the market in ANZ (and Asia-Pacific) wasn’t ready for them till recently. Now, that ANZ (and the region) has comparatively faster internet connections available at affordable prices, such technological marvels can really take off. Another noteworthy point from the news above is that Trend Micro is also doing well to target the SMBs in ANZ; the company is well aware of the need to target this segment to realise the growth potential moving forward. Finally, we also believe that Trend Micro will need to continue to price its products at a level that these SMBs find affable.

5.  McAfee Announces New Offerings to Help Enterprises with Compliance Issues; Talks about it’s Latest Mid-Market Focus & ANZ Plans
McAfee has launched two new offerings, McAfee® Policy Auditor 5.0 and McAfee Encrypted USB, touted as aiming to “empower enterprises” to follow an “optimized approach for efficient compliance management”,Concurrently the company has announced “significant enhancements” to its two data protection offerings, McAfee Endpoint Encryption and McAfee Host Data Loss Prevention (DLP).

Proclaimed as having an extended ability to enforce security policies, these offerings also reportedly allow an enterprise to access “quick” audit and report that it can use to define whether or not the compliance levels are being aptly met. Further, the company defines the “tight integration” of these offerings with McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator as the “key”, along with McAfee's centralized management system, and support for open standards.

Divulging further details about McAfee Policy Auditor 5.0, the company has stated that the offerings leverage open security standards such as XCCDF (Extensible Configuration Checklist Description Format) and OVAL (Open Vulnerability Assessment Language). The company also spoke about the need to have devices secured both off and on the network, and how McAfee Standard Encrypted USB v.2 ensures the safety of data in transition.

Available at an affordable price, this password-protected USB storage device reportedly provides a “high standard of encryption” (AES 256) and features optional data destruction following password authentication failure and zero-footprint technology. Also, both Policy Auditor and McAfee Endpoint Encryption allow for automation of the requisite processes for internal and external audits. Further, as mentioned above, “Integrated management” through McAfee ePO helps provide a “unified platform for compliance and security management”.

Springboard Research believes that McAfee’s latest offerings definitely address ANZ market needs and should, in theory, be well received. Ensuring compliance not only to industry regulations, but also to internal policies is a tough order to fill. While there exists a plethora of platforms that aim to facilitate enterprises in this endeavour, the processes have been complicated from a sheer lack of credible unified platforms operating with consistent standard and policies. The key here is not only to reduce the number of man hours required to collate and tabulate the data into reports and other requisite documents, but also to optimize the reporting at costs that even the SMBs find affordable.

In related news , McAfee’s SVP Global Mid-market Business, Darrell Rodenbaugh spoke to one of the online publications in ANZ, and proclaimed a fresh company focus on the mid-market to add to its archaic large enterprise-only strategy. This interview was focused on the company’s arch rivals of which, Symantec was one of the top names stated by them.
Defining the market for security in mid-market, Rodenbaugh stated that one of McAfee’s mainstays for the market is the simplicity of the solutions. He also stated that given the small amount of time mid-market enterprises dedicate to security, it is imperative to keep things simple while offering high-levels of protection. Further, identifying web security as a focus area, the company is looking to extensively use its resellers to target the segment and offer it either through traditional consulting services or managed services. Rodenbaugh also focused on the company’s online anti-malware security solution that allows its business partner to deliver any malware solution to customers and then monitor exposures and problems remotely.

Talking about emerging trends in the security space, Rodenbaugh described the move towards consolidation as critical. He asserted the need to have “easy to manage suites” that offer a wide range of security functions through a “single PC console”. This trend, he believes, is being driven by both the vendor community and customer demand. Speaking on data protection, Rodenbaugh emphasized the transformation of the the mid-market towards a realization of the need for protection, as well as the parallel push engendered by government enforced regulations. He also identified security of virtual environments as key for the company’s growth in the future.

Identifying Symantec as the “biggest competitor”, Rodenbaugh touted McAfee’s last quarter win with Bank of America and identified “difficulty in Symantec's upgrade cycle” as the core reason for the shift. He also stated that McAfee’ focus on customer experience was one of the key distinguishing factors against Symantec.

Further, Rodenbaugh spoke of the company’s intent to make fresh investments in its partner community and expand its SME Premier Partner program that which was recently introduced in the region. Speaking of details, the company plans to better support, new programs, deal registration, better rebates, marketing and co-marketing activities for its partners in the coming quarters.

Quantifying growth, Rodenbaugh mentioned that the company’s mid-market business grew by around 20 per cent last year and is expected to grow by about 30 per cent this year. To ensure the realization of projected sales, the company is also “investing heavily” in its mid-market sales force which is growing at a rate of 300 per cent, year-on-year.

Lastly, putting ANZ in focus, Rodenbaugh stated that the company is experiencing good growth locally and expects to further augment this by having its sales force work with its partners to develop opportunities locally.
