1.  CA Posts Sluggish Q3 FY09 Earnings; Acquires Yet Another Security Software Vendor
According to CA’s posted financial results for the third quarter (FY09) ending December 31, 2008, the company’s revenue decreased 5% YTY to US$1.042 billion. Total bookings (includes the value of new maintenance contracts in the current period and is separate from on-going license subscription contracts) for the quarter accounted for US$1.248 billion, indicating a decrease of 2% YTY. Interestingly, this decrease in total bookings comes after the impressive 44% YTY growth achieved in Q2 FY09.

The company also reported signing a total of 18 license agreements greater than US$10 million during the third quarter of FY2009, valued at US$471 million. The number of such deals increased from 16 in the third quarter of last year (FY2008), which accounted for US$303 million. From a geographic perspective, the company showed a 1% YTY increase for North America, and grouped other countries under “International Revenue,” a category which showed a dismal decrease of 13% YTY for the company.

Revenue Outlook for Fiscal Year 2009 (updated from Q3 FY09):
o Total bookings growth expected between 10 and 15 percent. This remains unchanged from last announcement.
o Total revenue growth in a range of 1 to 2 percent. This translates to a total revenue between US$4.23 billion and US$4.31 billion for the year

Springboard Research reiterates its belief that non-disclosure of ANZ (and Asia Pacific revenues) in financial updates conveys a weak and undecided strategy which will intensify the pessimism of clients in the region. With ANZ as the core to it’s Asia Pacific strategy, the company needs to be a lot more transparent about its operations and performance to ensure a good local standing. Further, the need to reassure clients is heightened in these turbulent economic times when enterprises are severely cash-strapped and wary of any new partnerships they forge.

In separate news, CA has announced its decision to acquire the New York based security software firm, Orchestria. Its third acquisition in the recent months, CA’s latest decision has received notable attention from industry observers. While the deal terms were not disclosed, the acquisition was expected to be closed by the end of January 2009 and all Orchestria employees expected to be retained by CA.

Orchestria focuses on development of data control and loss prevention software, and has development and engineering offices in the U.K. apart from the U.S. Further to the announcement, CA stated that this acquisition fits into the company’s plans of offering identity and access management software applications.

Springboard Research believes this is a good business decision and should work well to augment CA’s Identity and Access Management product portfolio. Further, though CA has not disclosed the deal terms, given the current economic scenario, the company is sure to have got a ‘cheap buy’ in this acquisition.

Springboard is also of the view that attacks on corporate data have grown tremendously in the recent years and CIOs in ANZ have been investing in security technologies to ensure data protection. However, given CA’s current weak footing in the region, success of the offerings hinges largely on the company’s motivation (and ability) to tap its regional partner ecosystem. The DLP space in the region is currently being catered to by the likes of Sun and EMC which are well entrenched and are aggressively investing in sales personnel and further augmenting the expertise of their local/regional partner network.

2.  EMC Posts Q4 FY08 and Full Year 2008 Financial Earnings, Announces Job Cuts and Offers no Guidance for 2009
Proclaiming it as the “first-ever US$4 billion-plus quarter”, EMC recently announced its fourth quarter results for the period ending December 31, 2008. The numbers showed that the company registered 5% YTY growth, and posted net revenue of US$4.02 billion in Q4 FY08. Divulging few details on its performance in specific geographies, the company mentioned 6% YTY growth for United States and a 4% YTY growth from “operations outside of United States” that it said represented 46% of the total fourth-quarter revenue. However, the company offered Asia Pacific growth figures for its Information Infrastructure business (approximately 87% of EMC’s business) and stated a 4% YTY growth in Q4 FY08.

The fastest growing business segment for the company continued to be VMware, which showed growth of 25% YTY, followed by RSA Information Security (5%) and Information Storage (3.5%). Specifically under Information Storage, EMC benefited from Storage Software Maintenance that experienced a double-digit growth YTY, while Storage Services grew a marginal 4.2% YTY. Interestingly, the Content Management & Archiving arm of the company showed negatively skewed growth, achieving revenue of only US$208 million in Q4 FY08, compared to US$238 million posted in Q4 FY07.

During the announcement, Joe Tucci, EMC Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer, also added that “EMC’s ability to achieve record financial results despite the macro-economy was driven by tight alignment with key customer priorities”. Further, proclaiming a ‘robust and diversified business model’ for FY2009, Tucci stated that the company expects to ‘lead and gain market share’. Offering more information on the business lines that kept good momentum throughout Q4 FY2008, the company identified the following areas:
• Networked storage solutions, with “particularly strong” revenue growth from unified storage systems
• Backup, recovery and archive solutions that leverage data de-duplication
• RSA security information & event management (SIEM) solutions and the RSA data loss & prevention (DLP) suite

With reference to SBUs, EMC’s key arm VMware has also seen a significant dip in growth rate; from a lofty 52% YTY growth in Q2 FY2008, to a reduced 33% YTY growth in Q3 FY2008, the growth rate has dipped further and stands at 25% YTY for Q4 FY2008. All divisions of the business have demonstrated a slowdown ranging from 6-11%, and EMC’s Chief Financial Officer, David Goulden stated the company’s intent to ‘streamline operations, reduce costs and strengthen the efficiencies of global operations’. However, Tucci added that the company is determined to further its ‘technology lead and maintain rapid product rollout cycle’ and will continue to ‘invest heavily’ in research and development.

Commenting on its overall performance in financial year 2008, the company stated a full-year revenue of US$14.88 billion, indicating growth of 12% YTY. Attributing new product and services launches for last year’s performance, the company stated a 9% YTY growth for its Information Infrastructure business which grew to US$13 billion in the financial year. Further, VMware was stated to contribute nearly 13% to its FY2008 revenue, accounting to US$1.88 billion.

In terms of geographic contribution, EMC stated a growth of 17% YTY in its “operations outside of the United States” and 9% YTY in United States for the financial year 2008. Further, while the former represented 46% of total annual revenue in FY2008 and includes Europe, Middle East & Africa (EMEA), Asia-Pacific & Japan (APJ) and Latin America, the latter contributed 54% to EMC’s revenue. Not mentioning any specific growth figures, the company has proclaimed “double-digit” YTY growth figures for each of the regions in “operations outside of the United States”.

Springboard Research believes that despite troubled financial times, EMC is one of the very few companies which has managed to keep a positively skewed growth rate across most of its SBUs and has posted record quarterly revenues. However, in terms of overall growth, this quarter’s financial results stand lower at 5% YTY compared to 13% YTY growth experienced last quarter. With dedicated focus on emerging markets and technologies, the company is expected to improve its growth rate in the upcoming quarters.

Revenue Outlook (for FY2009):
• Give the current economic scenario and uncertainty, EMC has not offered revenue, EPS or other financial outlook for the new financial year.

In related news, EMC has announced a lay off of 2,400 people or 7 percent of its workforce. While the company proclaimed record quarter earnings, it has put in place an aggressive restructuring programme to reduce expenses by $350 million in 2009. The plan also includes streamlining back-office operations and cutting layers of management.

The company has refrained from offering details about the layoffs in Australia and is keeping to its stand of “not disclosing specific numbers at a country level”. Further, in line with the announcement, a total of 60 people are being touted to be in the “firing line” and the process is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2010.

3.  Sun Microsystems Posts Embarrassing Q2 FY09 Results; Proclaims Thrust on Identity and Access Management for Enterprises in ANZ
Sun recently announced its Q2 FY09 results for the period ending December 28, 2008 which showed startling negative (-20% YTY) growth in Asia Pacific revenues. The region contributed 11% to the company’s total revenues in the quarter, down from 12% in Q1 FY09. Worldwide, Sun’s total revenues decreased by a substantial 10.9% YTY to US$3.22B. By region, while North America revenue decreased 11% YTY, Europe recorded a negative growth of 13% YTY. The sole region that recorded growth last quarter, “Emerging Markets” (12% YTY in Q1 FY09) also recorded a negative growth of 1% YTY. As per Sun’s definition, Emerging Markets includes India, Latin America and a combined Russia, Middle East and Africa geography.

Further, the company also specifically mentioned its Solaris-based Open Storage product line which it proclaims has achieved growth of 21% YTY in the quarter. Commenting on the quarterly results and the performance of Open Storage, Sun’s CEO Jonathan Schwartz claimed to be ‘delighted’ by the “aggressive” adoption of Open Source software, and Sun's Open Source Storage platforms.

Also, the products which accounted for the majority (60%) of Sun’s business witnessed a decrease in revenue by 14% YTY, while services which accounted for 40% of Sun’s revenue observed a negative growth of 6% YTY. Furthermore, breaking down its services into Support Services, and Professional Services/Educational Services segments, Sun announced that the former’s contribution to total services revenue decreased by 9% YTY, while the latter’s increased by 3% YTY.

Springboard Research believes Sun’s latest quarterly earnings are extremely dismal and one of the worst in the entire IT industry. If Sun’s discouraging quarterly earnings in the recent past (when other vendors were in the pink of health) are to be taken as a trend, this outcome can be well adjudged as being expected. While Springboard Research understands the pressures of the current economic scenario, it believes that a double-digit negative growth is difficult to justify and is likely to further deplete investor confidence in Sun.

In separate news, Sun is proclaiming renewed focus on its Identity and Access Management business. Justifying the need for such solutions, the company has stated that the ‘network is ushering in a new era of business growth and opportunity’. Further, the company also proclaimed that IAM solutions are imperative for today’s enterprise for reasons like compliance with internal security policies and external regulations.

Further to the announcement, the company also stated that the IAM solutions sit under Sun’s Software Infrastructure (SWI) product portfolio and are also offered under its Iplanet product series. While Sun did not disclose any pricing strategy, “heavy discounts” are being expected.
Springboard Research believes the IAM marketplace in ANZ (and Asia Pacific region) is literally flooded with products from the likes of IBM, HP and EMC. While the demand for IAM solutions is undoubtedly gaining traction from enterprises in the region, Sun will need to define a key value proposition to carve a market for its products. Using Open Source software as a trump card, Sun will be able to push regional sales to some extent, but the solution is not likely to be taken up by those who see little value in open source platforms.

4.  Mixed Stories: Kaspersky Lab’s To Open New Offices; Sophos Plans to Lay Off 5 Percent of Workforce But Makes No Comment on Lay Offs Expected in ANZ; D-Link Open Office in Perth; Fortinet Launches Database Security Appliance to Target SMBs in ANZ
Kaspersky Lab
In an effort to augment its global presence and support its partners and distributors with marketing and technical services, Kaspersky Lab is set to open seven new offices this year. While not all of these offices have been planned in the Asia Pacific region, the company has decided to include a few cities in the region to house its expansion plans and is expecting the Asia Pacific market to grow to be the largest security market over next 10 years.

As reported in the previous months, two of the proposed offices have already been designated in Australia and India, and the others will be rolled out in the next two years. Further, the company has stated that it regards India and China as important markets in Asia along with Malaysia which it considers as the key market in South-East Asia. Further, the company expects India and Vietnam to follow the security spend trends of Japan and South Korea.

Although the company is aiming all consumer segments- home business, SMBs and large enterprises, it is proclaiming key focus on enterprise accounts over the next two to three years with the aim of reducing dependence on the consumer segment. The company is not a listed entity but is confident that this will not prevent it from winning contracts in the enterprise segment; it claimed to have sufficient resources and finances to expand. However, the company maintained that the sheer need for a certain level of governance and transparency might ensure that it seeks a listing in London or New York in the next three to five years, depending on market recovery.

Further, Chief executive officer Eugene Kaspersky stated that despite the current ‘weak economic environment’, he expected ‘much potential’ for the anti-malware industry. He claimed that his company’s technical advantage, resulting from a dedication to research and development (R&D;), would help them gain higher market share in newer territories. Asserting focus on developing the business, infrastructure and new technology, the company also confirmed it’s willingness to divert from its organic growth strategy and take up mergers and acquisitions (M&As;).

Sophos
In an effort to cut costs and remain profitable, Sophos has announced its decision to lay off 5 percent of its workforce. While the company stated that it planned no job cuts in the engineering and product development team, 75 people have been asked to leave from the sales and marketing team. Proclaiming these changes as a result of the need to make ‘departments more efficient’, and ‘not related to world economic conditions’, the company has not offered any details on job losses that can be expected in Australia but has promised to move the affected people into other positions.

D-Link
Marking presence in Western Australia, D-Link has appointed Ian Hogben as Commercial Business Manager. Spearheading the company’s efforts from Perth, Hogben is a part of the company’s Business Solutions Group and will be focusing on the Commercial, Government, Education and small to medium business (SMB) markets. Expected to be instrumental in building relationships with distributors and systems integrators, Hogben will be aggressively pushing the company’s business networking products along with solutions for enterprise-level switching, security, wireless and storage.

Describing his key role as ‘raising awareness’ of the company’s commercial solutions in Perth, Hogben plans to help enterprises realise ROI on their networking infrastructure by assisting them in making “informed decisions about value and performance”. Reporting to Michael Bailey, National Corporate Sales Manager (based in D-Link’s Sydney headquarters), Hogben latest stint was with Ajilon as Lead Consultant with a focus on infrastructure and project management consulting in the insurance, utilities and government sectors.

Fortinet
Targeting small and medium business’s (SMBs) in ANZ, Fortinet has launched FortiDB database security appliance, FortiDB-400B. Declaring ‘added monitoring and auditing capabilities’ to its database security solution, the company is aiming to help SMBs protect their data in a ‘cost effective’ manner. Further, allowing either 24x7 or scheduled monitoring, the company has also proclaimed compliance with audit and regulatory requirements such as such as PCI-DSS (Payment Card Industry-Data Security Standard). Touting support for a ‘wide range’ of database environments, including Oracle, DB2, Sybase and MS SQL Server, FortiDB-400B can monitor up to 10 database instances from a single appliance. FortiDB family of products also includes FortiDB-1000B and FortiDB-2000B that are targeted at large enterprises.

Distributed in Australia through Whitegold Solutions, Lan 1, and Distribution Central, FortiDB-400B is available at a list price of $14,999 AUD ex GST and FortiDB-2000B at $49,999 AUD ex GST. Catering New Zealand enterprises through Ingram Micro and Distribution Central, FortiDB-400B is available at a list price of $18,999 NZD ex GST and FortiDB-2000B at $62,999 NZD ex GST.

5.  McAfee Announces New Partner Portal for Partners in ANZ and Offers Free Classroom Training
In addition to its decision to consolidate its operations (post its recent acquisitions) through 2009, McAfee has decided to roll out a new partner portal and “completely automate” interaction with its partner community in ANZ (and Asia Pacific region). Currently available only for its Premier and Elite partners, the new portal will be rolled out for the entire community on April 1, 2009 and is being proclaimed as having emerged as a result of partner feedback. While the portal allows partners to become certified online, it also includes features like automated deal registration, automatic renewals online and price configuration.

Further, the company also announced the launch of classroom training for its channel partners. Offered free of charge, this initiative is being touted to help partners “go deeper” in certification levels on the company’s products and solutions.

Springboard Research believes the need to consolidate operations, especially channels is critical for vendors with a large base of channel partners. This need is further heightened for companies like McAfee which have made acquisitions and need to ensure that the channel partner base (in each region) is well accustomed to the new products and solutions.

Given the distinct nature of the ANZ (and Asia Pacific region), most vendors typically have a plethora of localized (and regional) partnerships and hence need to ensure synergy is maintained. Ensuring all partners are well trained not only helps them win deals, but also guarantees high levels of customer satisfaction and hence repeated business.

Further, Springboard is of the view that in current economic conditions, vendors need to find innovative ways to communicate with the partners and also reduce the costs of these interactions. McAfee has surely taken a step in the right direction and its intent to automate processes is likely to reduce partner related operational costs.
