1.  McAfee Partners with Yahoo! To Offer Safer Web Search Experience to Users in ANZ; Proclaims Focus on Small and Medium Acquisitions
McAfee has announced a partnership with Yahoo! Inc. to offer a “safer Web search experience” through Yahoo! Search. This ‘multi-year, global agreement’ has been launched in beta and is currently being offered only in ANZ in the Asia-Pacific region. Using McAfee SiteAdvisor Technology, the companies are looking to offer “always-on-alert” security feature to users to guard them against ‘risky’ sites that can potentially damage a user’s PC with spyware and other infected software. Under the terms of the agreement, the companies also plan to introduce Yahoo! Search to McAfee users in the coming quarters.

Springboard Research believes that although this agreement is a step in the right direction, it is tagged with its fair share of uncertainty. Given the controversy currently looming over Yahoo!, the fate of this partnership would depend upon the possible outcome of the former. Further, a lot of users in ANZ prefer to use local search engines over global web search engines of the likes of Yahoo!, Google and MSN. We are of the view that to aptly target users in ANZ, McAfee will need to deep-dive into the local search engine market and aim at similar partnerships with the local players.

In a recent announcement, McAfee proclaimed its strategic intent to only undertake acquisitions that it defines as "small and medium-sized.” The company's top executive, Dave DeWalt, also stated that the company would avoid "transformative deals" and grow by “building and partnering” to effectively enable it to overtake its biggest rival, Symantec.

Crediting its latest go-to-market strategy for its accelerated growth over the past three quarters, the company stated that it aims to continue the trend with a mix of new product introductions, key partnerships and alliances with technology firms, and acquisitions in the range of US$50M to US$350M. DeWalt also stated that he aims to accelerate revenue growth in 2009 and 2010 past the “mid-teens” percentage growth targeted for 2008.

The company also announced that it plans to keep to its current rate of 2-3 acquisitions a year and build new revenue streams by introducing new products. Identifying data center protection using virtualization technology as its key growth area, the company also mentioned that it has already initiated efforts in this area and is looking forward to releasing products that scan data which has been stored and used by SAP.

Lastly, balancing his robust growth predictions for the company, DeWalt sounded a note of caution stating that McAfee “could see a fallout” from the U.S. economic downturn.
Springboard Research believes this strategy could well be a “double-edged sword” for McAfee which is currently doing very well in ANZ and the Asia-Pacific region. In our view, McAfee will need to watch out for new areas of growth like managed security services and security for virtualized environments and for niche firms which might function in these growing spaces. Security solutions and services is becoming an aggressively competitive space in ANZ with a host of niche and local firms increasingly targeting the SME segment. In our view, any company looking to attain or retain market leadership status, will not only need to offer solutions that fit well with the local demands, but will also have to form meaningful local alliances that will give it the requisite breadth and depth of operations in ANZ.

2.  Trend Micro Announces InterScan Messaging Hosted Security Service to Target ANZ Medium-Sized Businesses
Targeting the medium-sized mail businesses in ANZ and the Asia-Pacific region, Trend Micro has launched its InterScan Messaging Hosted Security application. Described as providing “enterprise class” mail security to businesses, this latest Trend Micro product, is touted byb the company as resolving real concerns for SMEs which continue to face increased security risks and are therfore “seriously considering” outsourcing data security management.

Pointing to its success in ANZ, and other regions where its hosted email security service was launched almost a year back, Trend Micro stated that it serves a whole range of customers with mailboxes from 5 to 25,000. Further, unlike other hosted services, this service does not require the customer to invest in hardware or software, a feature the company is aggressively using to promote its service.
The company also claims that its service provides features such as zero-day protection, advanced heuristics, and behavior analysis to block targeted attacks, along with “flexible content filtering” to help enforce compliance and prevent data leakage.

Trend Micro’s service is currently available in Asia Pacific as an extended free trial until June 30, 2008; this extends the usual 30-day trial period to 90 days. The service is available as an annual standard package that covers 10 users at US$23.60, and an advanced yearly package that covers 10 users for US$35.60.

Springboard Research believes that the market for managed security services, including hosted email security is gaining pace in ANZ and will continue to grow in the coming years. However, the competitive landscape for this service is flooded with a host of offerings and companies that are vying for market share in both the enterprise and SME segments. While Google and niche local firms like SurfControl are the latest entrants into this market, it’s MessageLabs that continues to come across as the dominant player. While this competition is helping the quick maturity of solutions that increasingly offer escalated benefits like meeting compliance requirements and saving storage costs, it’s also leading to a price-war between the main players.

3.  Sun Microsystems Posts Q308 Results Showing Asia Pacific Registering Growth of 5% YTY; Claims Upsurge in Open Storage in Asia-Pacific
Sun recently announced its Q308 results for the period ending March 30, 2008, which showed Asia Pacific revenues up 5% YTY. The region contributed 19% to the company’s total revenues in the quarter, up from 17% in Q208. Worldwide, Sun’s total revenues decreased by 0.5% YTY to US$3.266B. By region, both Asia Pacific and EMEA recorded revenue growth of 5% YTY, while Sun’s highest revenue growth came from the International Americas (15% YTY), and the lowest from the U.S., which recorded negative growth of 10% YTY.

Notably, Sun stated that India showed double-digit YTY growth in Q308. The company also commented that the products that accounted for the majority (61%) of Sun’s business witnessed a decrease in revenue by 3% YTY, while those that accounted for just 39% of Sun’s revenue observed 3% YTY growth. Furthermore, breaking down its services into Support Services, and Professional Services/Educational Services segments, Sun announced that the former’s contribution to total services revenue increased by 1% YTY, while the latter’s increased by 11% YTY.

Springboard Research observes that Sun’s growth pattern is contrary to that detailed in other firms’ last quarter earnings. While double-digit growth in India is definitely good news, Sun’s overall regional growth patterns raise serious concerns about the company’s go-to-market strategy.

In Asia-Pacific wide news, Sun Microsystems has proclaimed an “upsurge” in the preference for open storage as compared to proprietary storage, which they believe locks the customer in to a single vendor. While targeting sectors such as telecom, retail, banking, financial services and insurance in key markets like ANZ and India for growth in the storage market, the company is also focusing on startups which it believes will spur the adoption of open source.

To assist the adoption of its OpenSolaris server hardware and OpenStorage by its developer community, Sun has announced technical support and how-to guides for NAS and OpenSolaris storage. Further, the company has also promised new software tools and expanded professional support in the coming quarters which it claims will allow developers to set up an OpenSolaris server in approximately 10 minutes.

Springboard Research believes Open-Source Storage (OSS) to be a natural evolution of storage and definitely a step in the right direction by Sun. However, in our view, OSS is yet to make much of an impression in the storage market and continues to be plagued by a host of issues like commercial applicability and pricing that might not fall in line with the developer’s expectations.

4.  CommVault Reports Q408 and Overall FY08 Results ; Identifies New Growth Areas
CommVault recently announced its Q408 results, which, with total revenues of $56.6 million, represent a robust growth of 33% over Q407 and 13% over Q308. The data management firm’s revenue growth was driven by a healthy 32% YTY increase in its software revenue, which reached US$31.3 million, and an even more impressive 34% YTY increase in its services revenue, which measured $25.3 million. In addition, the company reported a 36% YTY increase in its sales and marketing expenses to total US$26.2 million for Q408.
For the complete fiscal year, CommVault’s total revenue increased by 31% YTY, measuring US$198.3 million; its software revenue grew by 30% YTY, rising to US$109 million and its services revenue increased by 33% YTY, totalling US$89.3 million.

Springboard Research believes that CommVault cleverly uses a variety of business approaches to achieve its robust growth rates. Not only has the company been successful in forming meaningful alliances and partnerships, it has also strategically used its latest product, Simpana 7.0, to create new revenue streams.

In tandem with its Q408 announcement, CommVault also identified emerging technologies which, it says, will provide the company with the most future growth , namely, block-level data de-duplication, information management, records management, storage as a service and laptop/desktop backup. However, the company also mentioned that it will not enter the hosted online backup market, and will let its partners, Rackspace, Incentra and others, operate in that space.

Springboard Research is of the view that these emerging technologies are the key to growth for most vendors operating in this space who continue to fight stagnant market shares and decreasing margins in other, more matured geographies of US and EU. However, most of these MNC vendors will need to keep a vigil on the local and niche firms in ANZ that are steadily expanding base in the SME segment. We believe it’s critical for vendors in this marketplace to look for suitable local alliances that will allow them to cater to the local needs and also gather the requisite coverage in ANZ.

5.  CA Posts Q408 earnings; Appoints Alan Smith To Drive Channel Sales in the Pacific
According to CA’s financial results for the fourth quarter (FY08) ending April 31, 2008, revenue increased 8% YTY to US$1.1 billion, while for the whole fiscal year, revenue increased by 8% YTY to US$4.3 billion. Total product and services revenue for the quarter accounted for US$1.5 billion, indicating 30% YTY growth for the quarter, while for the total year, revenues grew 15% YTY to reach US$4.5 billion.

The company also claimed a revenue of US$1.4 billion during FY 08 from a total of 61 license agreements greater than US$10 million. Significantly, the number of such licenses was only 42 in the previous year. From a geographic perspective, the company showed a 2% YTY increase for North America, and grouped other countries under “International Revenue” that showed 16% YTY growth for the company.

Furthermore, CA announced its decision to restructure its development teams around enterprise IT management (EITM), governance and mainframe solutions, and common infrastructure.

Springboard Research is not surprised that CA didn’t reference its Asia Pacific revenue in its latest financial update. Since CA closed some of its major offices in the region, the industry has almost forgotten the player, even while the company touts sweeping internal changes designed to help it make a comeback in the region’s security market. As we’d said in our previous statement on CA’s decision to re-enter the market, Asia Pacific does not usually allow comebacks and we doubt if CA will be able to make significant accretion to its revenue from the region.

In other news, CA announced the appointment of Allan Smith to the position of Vice President, Channel Sales, Pacific. The company expects Smith to make a “major contribution” to their channel partner strategy in the area. Smith has held key positions of country manager for Australia, Korea, and Hong Kong during his 30-year old tenure. Prior to joining CA, Smith was the CEO-ANZ at Ariba and technical support operations manager at the Commonwealth Bank of Australia.

6.  EMC Announces Enhancements to its Product Lines; Expects Enterprise Flash Storage Drives to Lower Cost by 2010; Announces Deal with Brocade
EMC unveiled a range of storage hardware and software products on the opening day of its EMC World Conference held in May at Las Vegas, Nevada (U.S.). This mega launch included the company’s disk-based backup products bundled with the much-talked about de-duplication technology from Quantum, along with the new “fast-start” version of its NetWorker data protection software that is being touted as helping EMC change its reputation of a “clunky application” provider.

EMC’s latest products are based on Quantum technology, which allows for host-based de-duping, post-processing de-duping and also for “policy-based deduping” for improved performance. While the EMC Disk Library 3D 1500 and DL3D 3000 virtual tape libraries (VTL) already include Quantum’s licensed de-dupe software, the company has announced definitive plans to add the technology to its DL 4000 disk-based VTL “as an upgrade” by the end of July 2008.

Further to the announcement, the company introduced the DL3D 1500 and the DL3D 3000 on May 28 at starting prices of $150,000, and $200,000, respectively.

The company also used the conference to promote flash drives as the future of enterprise storage and proclaimed that it expects these flash storage drives to cost “as little as fibre channel alternatives” by 2010. Referring to them as the “most significant announcement” made by EMC this year, the company expects a “dramatic reduction” in their prices thereby making way for “price parity”.

In another noteworthy news, EMC has announced a deal with Brocade which will allow Brocade's “developing” fabric encryption technology to interoperate with EMC RSA's Key Manager for Datacenters. The integration, it is claimed, will enable single-point encryption for enterprises that use a variety of data. EMC already has an existing OEM relationship with Brocade for its SAN switches and directors and offers them as part of its EMC Connectrix family.

Springboard Research believes the market for emerging technologies such as “dedupe” in ANZ is definitely on the increase and will gain higher traction in the coming quarters. While reduced storage costs are the main promoter for using such technologies, these also help to more effectively manage documents, improve workflow and maintain the compliance protocol. When substantiated by suitable alliances, like the one noted above these technologies , assist performance considerably and this is surely welcome in a geography like ANZ that is inundated with SMEs.
