1.  CA Announces New Internet Security Suite to Target Consumers in ANZ; Partners with VMware to Push its Recovery Management Solutions in ANZ
CA recently launched the Internet Security Suite Plus 2009, targeted at consumers in ANZ (and Asia Pacific),. Described as an application to protect consumers from a “wide-range of emerging online threats,” the security suite follows last month’s launch of CA Gateway Security r8.1, which was mainly developed for SMBs in the region. The suite includes an “enhanced” personal firewall, anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-spam and anti-phishing software and claims to offer “stronger protection,” Monitored through its “single console,” the suite also includes parental control, and data backup and recovery.

Asserting “user friendliness” and “at-your-fingertips customer support,” the company has included an “Intuitive Help Desk” function with the suite to allow users to set preferences or check program status, and a gaming/movie mode to reduce interruptions. The company is also touting the product’s “WiFi HotSpot detection technology” as its cornerstone feature which aims to provide “tailored security options” for consumers.

Furthermore, CA’s Internet Threat Outlook Report has revealed that “smarter malware and bots” dominate online attacks and so the compnay is pushing the suite’s parental control feature to aggressively sell the product in the consumer space. Other new features of the suite include:
• Supports the Domain Key Internet Mail (DKIM) and Sender Policy Framework (SPF) industry-standard email security protocols
• Silent Protection automatically analyzes program behavior to determine whether it is safe, and allows or denies access

Available at a one-year subscription rate of US$79.99, Internet Security Suite Plus includes licenses for a maximum of five home PCs and supports a range of Windows OS (Windows(R) 2000 Professional with SP4+Update Rollup 1, Windows XP and Windows XP Media Center Edition with SP2, and Windows Vista(R)).

The company has also introduced an “Internet Protection Plan.” Available at “no additional cost,” the plan gives consumers up to $10,000 worth of identity theft coverage and coverage against damage to the customer's PCs caused by a computer virus. Under the terms of this plan, data is protected on one PC with Mobile Lifeline(TM) software [(includes complimentary identity theft protection worth up to $5,000 if the customer's identity is compromised). The customer is also eligible to receive up to $5,000 in technical service and/or hardware repair or replacement (in the event of a PC failing from a virus infection following installation of the suite). The $5,000 limit is aggregate and covers up to five PCs. CA announced plan terms and conditions for the U.S. only, and has not yet divulged any details specific to Asia Pacific.

Springboard Research believes that while the latest product launch by CA is comparable to competitive products and is an improvement over its previous version, there still exist gaps in overall architecture. Though the company is touting higher speed and improved interface with the latest suite, user reviews do not suggest the same. Furthermore, the suite’s ultimate success greatly depends on the health of its partner ecosystem in ANZ. While the company is still claiming strong presence, its decision to quit key markets in Asia earlier this year has garnered CA much negative publicity.

Springboard Research is of the view that price points are also an important purchase consideration and CA is definitely not one of the cheaper options. In addition, while CA’s “Internet Protection Plan” is innovative, the company has been ambiguous about the availability of the offering in ANZ (and Asia Pacific). Springboard Research views this lack of information as indicative of the firm’s slack sentiment towards driving sales in the region, an attitude which will not play well in an intensely competitive market.

In other strategic news, CA joined VMware’s global Alliance Affiliate Initiative with a view “to boost profitability for CA’s channel partners in Australia”. Formally launched on December 1, 2008, the partnership allows CA to push its recovery management solutions and support VMware’s virtualization solution. Through the co-marketing initiative, CA is looking to create “fresh opportunities” for its partners in the disaster recovery and/or business continuity space.

Revealing other details, CA has confirmed the availability of a 10 percent discount (at the time of purchase) when the combined offering is purchased through its key local channel partners, Ingram Micro in Australia and DataStor in New Zealand. Furthermore, the company is looking to provide resellers access to educational tools, partner toolkits, online training, webcasts, white papers, demos and software evaluations, and other financial incentives. To further augment local sales the initiatives will be supported by localized co-marketing programs. Directed at its resellers’ partners, the company has also planned numerous webcasts and seminars throughout November and December of this year.

Springboard Research believes this is a step in the right direction and CA could potentially benefit from this alliance. At the same time, Springboard Research has reservations about CA achieving optimum results in the region and has identified the following two reasons for its concern:
• CA is late to the game – Fellow competitors tied up with VMware earlier this year and have asserted their thought leadership. Clearly, although this partnership is a requirement for CA, the company cannot escape the consequences of being a “follower.”
• Weak and undecided strategy for ANZ (and Asia Pacific) – Springboard reiterates the need for vendors to have a well-entrenched partner presence to succeed in the region. Evidently, the success of this tie-up with VMware will, to a large extent, depend on how CA’s partners can push (and deliver) the solution locally. While Springboard envisions burgeoning demand for such solutions in the region, CA’s ability to gain a substantial market presence in the long run is debatable, given its current apathy in the region.

2.  EMC Unveils Cloud Storage Offering; Appoints Global Services Unit head to Target ANZ SMBs; Partner with Valorem in Australia
Earlier this month, EMC unveiled its cloud storage offering, “Atmos,” which the company had code-named “Maui” and referred to as cloud-optimized storage (COS) initially. Chiefly targeted at media and entertainment companies, telecoms, and Web 2.0 and Internet providers, the offering aims to help businesses “build and deliver” Internet-based applications on a “massive scale.”

While the company has not divulged any pricing details, it has given direction as to how to obtain the offering which can be:
• Purchased by itself and run on x86 servers virtualized with VMware's hypervisor, or
• Purchased in a bundle with EMC's "Hulk" hardware offering, which combines x86 servers with SATA drives

The offering (combination of hardware and software) includes the following key features:
• Web service APIs with REST and SOAP interfaces
• Auto-managing and auto-healing features that reduce administration
• Browser-based administrator tools that allow storage to be managed from any location.
• Multi-tenant support allowing applications and their data to be securely partitioned, while being served from the same storage infrastructure

Other features include replication, versioning, compression, de-duplication and power-saving disk drive spin-down.

Adding to the announcement, Mike Feinberg, SVP of EMC's cloud infrastructure group, stated that the product (earlier launched in June this year) already has “dozens of customers” and continues to be wanted “as a combination” (along with the EMC hardware), rather than as Atmos software alone.

Springboard Research is of the view that this launch will put EMC in the “next league” and help the company stand out in a space that is attracting much attention from vendors. The company has done well to target the offering to a chosen set of industries and to offer solid benefits like high scalability and automated data placement.

Springboard Research believes that most storage firms are now focusing exclusively on emerging technologies which, they believe, will drive growth. This mindset has intensified further with the recent economic downturn. On the other hand while most companies are expecting a slowdown in business from large enterprises, they are also hoping for increased spending from SMBs (the space is still largely untapped) and from the consumer segment.

In view of the above, Springboard Research expects EMC to quickly find takers for this offering in both Australia and New Zealand. However, Springboard Research also believes that EMC will need to educate its customers and the channel on how the offering differs from its existing portfolio in order to communicate real-time business benefits, Lastly, competition is this space is likely to escalate with the entry of vendors like Sun and IBM, who have been keen to make their mark.

In ANZ focused news, the company has appointed Gary Cox as head of its global services unit. With an aim of growing its services business in ANZ, Cox has stated a dedicated focus on the ANZ information lifecycle market. He also hinted at “securing alliances” in ANZ while aiming to deepen relationships with local partners and further, reaching out to SMBs by building on these local relationships. Lastly, according to Cox, the company intends to effectively utilize its ANZ Global Services division.

Cox has more than 25 years experience in the IT industry and has spent 14 years at Microsoft in various roles. In his latest stint, Cox was the CEO for True Local, a subsidiary of News Corporation.

In more ANZ specific news, EMC has tied up with Valorem Systems Australia Pty Ltd (Valorem) to custom develop the Praxeo Remote Token Service. Facilitated by RSA’s Professional Services team, the deal involves deployment of RSA SecurID Authentication Manager for Valorem’s clients. The service is being promoted as a way to ensure enterprises can “centrally manage” remote and contract workforce spread over multiple locations. With this offering EMC is helping Valorem to specifically target the facilities management marketplace.

3.  Trend Micro Announces Q3 FY08 Results Showing a 7% Dip in Asia Pacific Revenues; Launches Trend Micro E-mail Encryption Gateway 5.0 to Target Medium and Large Businesses in ANZ
Trend Micro announced its third quarter results for the period ending September 30, 2008. The numbers showed that the company registered growth of 3% YTY and posted net sales of US$241 million (25,968 million yen) in Q2 FY08. Geographically, Asia Pacific showed a decrease of 7% YTY in this quarter, while North America showed the highest growth with 10% YTY in the quarter, followed by Europe at 4%, and Japan and Latin America at 1%. Operating income for Q3 FY08 was pegged at US$70 million (7,582 million yen) and net income at US$54 million (5,861 million yen).

Revenue Outlook for Q4 FY08, ending December 31, 2008:
• Consolidated net sales are expected to be US$271 million (24,400 million yen)
• Operating income is expected to be US$82 million (7,400 million yen)
• Net income is expected to be US$53 million (4,800 million yen)

Springboard Research believes that Trend Micro is in a very interesting position. While the company has been able to largely avoid a financial crunch, and failed to meet its earlier announced Q3 target by only US$10 million, it’s in a dismal state in the Asia Pacific region. Apart from its negative growth in the region in purely financial terms it has also failed to make significant additions to its customer base. In the past quarter, other than securing five key new customers in China and one in Thailand, the company has reported no other noteworthy wins in the region.

In a signifiacant addition to its e-mail encryption product line, the company recently launched Trend Micro E-mail Encryption Gateway 5.0, with the aim of targeting medium and large businesses in Asia Pacific. Based on the technology acquired with its purchase of Identum, the product is being touted by the company as being able to completely integrate with Trend Micro gateway messaging security solutions (Trend Micro InterScan Messaging Security Suite 7.0 and InterScan Messaging Security Virtual Appliance 7.0). The solution is also proclaimed as allow ing interoperability with solutions from other gateway e-mail security vendors.

In addition Trend Micro has stated that ,in order to “avoid administrative pain,”, instead of using cumbersome Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) technology, the new solution utilizes Identity-based Encryption (IBE), along with in-the-cloud encryption key management. The company has also identified channel partners as an integral part of their go-to-market strategy and is keenly looking at them to target mid-sized businesses. Available as of December 1, 2008, the subscription is priced at US$60 per user.

Springboard Research believes that e-mail encryption is a growing market in ANZ and is already treated as a priority by CIOs who are under high pressure to follow regulatory procedures. Issues concerning protection of customer data and intellectual property are also driving the demand for such solutions.

From an industry perspective, the market is growing quickly with customers from the BFSI and ITeS industries. However, Springboard is of the view that partner ecosystems are critical to driving domestic demand and so Trend Micro will need to invest to foster its local channel. Lastly, Springboard believes that vendors need to handhold customers during the initial deployment stages, as this ensures high levels of understanding about the technology and consequently higher customer satisfaction.

In an Australia exclusive announcement, Trend Micro has launched a local marketing promotion with a total worth of over AU$100,000. Touted as the biggest ever promotion, the security vendor is giving away a 42" LG plasma television every day until January 6, 2009. Applicable to new purchases, upgrades and renewals of Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security Pro 2009, the draw is automatically valid for both online and retail sales. Describing it as the “most exciting promotion” in the past 20 years, David Peterson, Consumer Director for Australia and New Zealand, stated that the company is giving out a total of 67 plasma TVs over the promotion period.

Revealing further details about the product, Peterson talked about online backup storage that is available for 3 licenses (20 GB per computer). This service,, provided free of charge for 12 months by Carbonite, is described by the company as a ‘set and forget’ model that allows users to copy files and synchronize while the Internet connection is idle. Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security Pro 2009 (with Carbonite) is currently available online and in retail stores, at a price of RRP AU$129.95.

4.  Sun Microsystems Announces New Solutions as Part of its HPC Suite; Decides to Lay Off 6,000 People and Implements a Major Restructuring Program likely to Affect 650 Employees in Australia; Gets Aggressive in ANZ to Promote sales
Aiming to “accelerate divisional and departmental HPC deployments,” Sun announced new products and technologies, including the Sun Storage Cluster, Sun Compute Cluster and HPC software solutions. Commenting on the announcement, John Fowler, EVP, Systems Platforms Group, stated that these solutions are “just the beginning” and the market must keep track of Sun’s Open Storage products that he believes will “radically change the economics of the HPC market.”

Currently, Sun’s Open Storage solutions include the Sun Storage 7000 ‘Amber Road’ family, the Lustre parallel file system and the Sun Constellation System. The company claims “breakthrough analytic capabilities” with the Sun Storage 7000 ‘Amber Road’ family [along with other benefits], while its Constellation System has double the storage capacity .Expected to scale capacity from 48 terabytes up to multiple petabytes, the Sun Storage Cluster combines Sun Fire servers and data servers with the Lustre file system and a high-speed interconnect.

Springboard Research believes that Sun’s core strategy behind the recent product launches is pretty clear: it’s aiming to increase sales of its ailing hardware and services divisions by using open source software. While this is not exactly a flawed strategy, the steep cost at which Sun offers its hardware platforms and services largely fails to impress its targeted customers, who are cost-conscious storage buyers. Furthermore, while nominal earnings might be realized through this strategy, these will be unable to make any significant dent in the terrible loses (US$1.67 billion) suffered by the company in the last quarter.

In a separate announcement, Sun has decided to scale down its workforce by a massive 6,000 people (15 to 18% of the total workforce). Further, the company has separately mentioned that a total of 650 employees in Australia are likely to lose their jobs in the near future. The company expects savings of US$700 to US$800 million annually as a result of these layoffs. The company expects the layoffs to come into effect in the third quarter of Sun's 2009 fiscal year (January to March 2009), expects to incur approximately US$500 million to US$600 million in layoff costs over the next 12 months

Sun has also restructured its software business into three groups: Application Platform Software, Systems Platforms and Cloud Computing & Developer Platforms. The restructuring , along with the reduction in its workforce is said to better “align cost models with the global economic climate."

In other news, Rich Green, Sun's EVP of Software, has resigned and the company has yet to announce a replacement for him. Furthermore, the company has announced that Dave Douglas will head the Cloud Computing & Developer Platforms division, a group Sun wishes to use to “capitalize on the trend toward online software.” The other group, Application Platform Software, will promote Sun's Java technology franchise, MySQL open source database products, and software infrastructure business, including the GlassFish application server and identity management products. The company has decided to include its Learning Services division under this group headed by Sun EVP Anil Gadre. The last group, the Systems Platforms group, will now be headed by Sun EVP John Fowler and drive sales of Sun's Solaris, Virtualization (including xVM and VirtualBox) and Systems Management Software products.

A related announcement is the decision of the company to restructure its global marketing divisions into two: products and corporate. As part of its overall cost reduction measures, the company hopes to cut an additional US$100 million from its media and marketing budget and “align its marketing functions to more effectively support its sales and product divisions.”

Springboard Research is of the view that Sun’s recent job cuts and restructuring qualify as “desperate measures” to keep the company afloat. Clearly, Sun has performed dismally in the last quarter and is quickly eroding its market capitalization. Two of the immediate measures that Sun must take are to improve its financial health and invest in brand building. Such measures could range from pursuing a possible merger, infusing fresh capital through the private equity route, or completely doing away with a few product lines that are not finding sufficient demand.

In other ANZ focused news, Sun has decided to offer aggressive discount programs ,targeted at start ups in the region, to help companies step up purchase despite the economic downturn. Offered through its’ ‘Sun Startup Essentials Program’, the schemes enable ‘newly established businesses’ to avail of a massive 65% (up to) discount on Sun’s products and services. In order to qualify for this scheme, the company should have been in business for less than 6 years or have less than 150 employees. Discounted products include X86 servers and other low-end storage devices and interestingly, some servers are available at a sub-AU$1,000 price tag. While the discounts will also be made available to companies wishing to adopt Windows platforms, Sun plans to screen each applicant to ensure products are only being used for “operational purposes”. The company has also stated its decision to offer this program through its partners, MCR and WebCentral.

In other efforts to boost demand in ANZ, Sun is ‘considering’ leasing options for its Modular Data Center, or Blackbox. Revealing a few details about the decision, Sun has stated that it plans to rent out the Modular DC itself or outsource the business to a channel partner. Angus MacDonald, CTO Sun Asia Pacific has also stated that a Blackbox with a “reasonable configuration” is available for AU$1.6 million, compared to the average cost of AU$8 to AU10 million for other data centres.
